I always wanted an anamorphic version of Armageddon, i had the Criterion collection 2 disc version.

To cut a long story short after a thread on here i was advised that the region 2 special edition was anamorphic and the sound quality was as good and play was selling it for a tenner.

I received the disc today and ive spun selected scenes and studied it close and yes the picture quality is marginally better because of the anamorphic transfer but............... the sound quality is a letdown, the sound lacks the richness of the Criterion edition and the bass sounds distinctly 1 note and isnt as deep, perhaps this is due to the 4% speedup or perhaps Criterion made more of an effort with the sound but to my ears the Criterion edition sounds so much richer smoother and better, from the opening titles to the end music titles i just think the Criterion edition sounds so much better.

So i guess i'll be selling it for £8 if anyone wants it.

Has anyone else noticed this and would care to comment?

Buena Vista reissued all the original Armageddons around the world last year. I always felt that the Criterion was the best edition but the non-anamorphic transfer let it down. The ultimate version of this movie was the R2 Japanese dts edition, but alas this has also gone out of print. So we are left with the new anamorphic editions in R2 land, the R4 is no different and the rights are due to go back to buena vista in the states soon, so who knows we may get a R1 edition with anamorphic transfer and dts sound, but don't hold your breath.

Think I'll stick with the original RSDL R2 as it is the best picture of ALL versions (been 3 R2 - this is the middle one)

The R2 2 discer is identical to the R1 Criterion but is anamorphic, it even has "The criterion Collection" on the spine.

You say it is identical well all i can say is take a good close listen to both versions because it does not sound the same, there is a lack of warmth and deep deep bass in the region 2 version compared to the criterion version i have.

Nop not the same, it loses the gag reel and some of the outtakes.

    The Jap dts edition:

    * doesn't have the director's cut of the movie, just the theatrical cut

    * is non-anamorphic

    * has no extras at all

Given the above, its status as "ultimate version" is certainly questionable ;)

I haven't compared the two mate so I'll take your word for it. I'd rather have the anamorphic transfer though. I can't stand non-anamorphic NTSC on a CRT.

The R2 and R4 have 384Kbps DD5.1 soundtracks. Check your Criterion - is it 448Kbps? If so, this is the cause of the difference you are hearing :)

SG, My use of the word ultimate was in reference to Foxymulders question of audio.

I haven't seen many versions of Armageddon, but the 2nd R2 is reckoned to be best.

    R2 original non-anamorphic flipper
    R2 no 2 anamorphic RSDL
R2 no 3 (Criterion) anamorphic RSDL extended version off NTSC master

    R1 non-anamorphic
    R1 Criterion non-anamorphic

A Criterion R1 owner says R2 RSDL is a better picture!

He has a Pioneer 717 and at the time a pre Wega Sony 32" W/S conected via S-Vid. Whereas I have the kit below RGB connected
