Nice review, but I liked it a shade more Kumari...

      Creed II

I won't bother to go into story details here other than to say, it continues the Creed story nicely, and works a treat as a more mature big brother to Rocky IV. I think the people who are likely to get the most out of this, will have been around to witness the cheesy joys of Stallone take on the Cold War in 1985, but also enjoyed the recent Creed. There's a fair dollop of nostalgia here, and there are one or two nice nods to the previous films if you're paying attention.
Ryan Coogler may have rebooted the films with Creed, but I didn't miss him here really. His replacement Steven Caple Jr does a terrific job here, and the fight sequences here in particular, deliver and then some.
Stallone notches up another excellent performance, easily on a par with his last in Creed. And despite the shift in the franchise name tag, he's still the emotional cornerstone of these films and I honestly can't imagine him not appearing in some form, should a Creed III happen. It really is a joy to see him onscreen again portraying a 'twilight years' Rocky, and bring real heart to the proceedings.
Michael Jordan pulls off a nicely layered showing of a man dealing with battles in and out of the ring (and not always entirely likable), and Tessa Thompson provides some solid support as his better half. And what about that voice?!
I had concerns over Dolph Lundgren appearing again, especially if he had to deliver any more than two lines, but he actually has an unexpectedly strong presence. And he gets an early scene that literally gave me goosebumps.
Florian Munteanu, who plays Drago Jr is a beast, who looks like he could snap Michael Jordan in two! Despite barely having any lines, he registers in a big way here. Literally...
Sure, there's a bit of cheese here, and the story is well trodden in parts, but there's also one or two unexpected turns. And the third act is a doozy.
The score by Ludwig Goransson is terrific, and just as good as the previous instalment (which I'll be purchasing again).
It won't change moviemaking, and it IS the eighth movie in a 40 odd year old franchise, but it absolutely worked for me. A monster crowdpleaser imo.

      9/10

I think to key to enjoying this is how much your invested in, and care about, the main characters. After so many previous instalments, over such a long period of time, Rocky in particular feels like family. The penultimate scene where
Rocky reconnects with his son and grandson, about had me in pieces (and especially the line referencing Adrian). Nice to see Milo Ventimiglia reprising his role from part 6.

Yes, I saw this last week in Florida and I thought it was a good watch.
I thought it belonged more in the sequel to rocky 4 camp than the first Creed though.

Despite it being part of an ongoing film series, this had a similar impact on me that I got from Bo Rhap. I've been thinking about this a lot this morning, and for all it's big glossy nature, it was some of the quieter moments that worked best.

The marriage proposal and the baby hearing test spring to mind.

Watched this with my brother last night. Both huge rocky fans especially rocky 4. Didn’t care for creed 1 much but this was fantastic. Felt like a rocky movie and a direct sequel to rocky 4.
I do find it hard to see where they go from here though. Over the course of the saga everything has been played out.

Yes, I know what you mean. It seemed to draw a line under the whole saga by it's closing scenes. But then I figured the franchise had reached it's natural conclusion with Rocky Balboa. Nobody was more surprised than me when Creed was announced.

      Drago!
The scene with father & son training together after his defeat almost feels like a set up.

As for Rocky and Creed I think they're done. Then again, I thought the same about Woody & Buzz....

Agree about the set up but I saw the roles of
Drago father and son as deliberately limited. As far as I know Florian Munteanu who played Vicktor hasn't any past experience acting (hence the lack of lines), and Dolph, well, he was solid given what he had to work with (although he's damn wooden in The Expendables). Not sure they could carry a movie.

Yeah fair point. Although I could easily imagine a spin-off Netflix series (with the roles re-cast) one day.

As for the Rocky/Creed series, I think its done and dusted and would be happy enough if it ended here.

...at least for another 25 years until Logan Balboa takes up boxing and gets trained by Adonis ;)

*Coming To America* Apollo JNR vs *I break you* Drago JNR in laymans terms.
