The Phenom II 920 is one hell of a bargain on there at the moment as well, £157. That's a good £40 less than the Q9300/Q9400 that i've seen it benchmarking against (not to mention the £20 or so less that AMD motherboards retail for).

I'm just praying the price holds until pay day!

Did the price drop only last a few days? One week after your post and the prices are as high as they were a long time ago. :(

The Q9550's are £225 which is about £20 more than I paid for a Q9450 last May/June so not much of a reduction.

But still not very attractive when the i7 920's cost less and perform better.

Certainly wouldn't convince me to splash the cash on replacing a Q9450, even if the revisions have improved overclockability.

But you would get a Q9650 with the Q6600 you have?

If your sig is current and you have the Q6600 running at 3.2GHz, the overclock on yours is pretty much the same as my Q9450 C1 revision. I can get my Q9450 to 3.5GHz at a reasonable voltage, keeping inside the Intel recommended voltages. I don't think it would go much further.

Many of our system components are the same or similar. GA-X48-DS5, OCZ 2x2GB Reaper PC8500 and WD 500GB RE2 among other things.

Depends how cheap the Q9650 will go down as i may need memory as well for the overclock if not (good deals on mem at moment), will wait and get i7 at end of year.. system at moment is bang on in games , maxed out etc.. will have to see..

It is that dam upgrade bug :D

The Q6600 can beat the pants off Phenom II 920 and it can overclock better.

The Q6600 can (overclocked) beat Q9300/Q9400 as well.

Not really, over the past few months new Q6600 chips are lucky if they hit 3.2GHz overclocked. Intel have put an end to the days of silly overclocks on that chip, it's been affecting sales of their higher end quads. The Phenom 920 will do 3.7GHz without much bother.

I'm not quite sure where you get the information that the Q6600 is faster from? The 920 is widely reviewed as being on-par with the Q9300/Q8200 in performance. Heck, the X4 9950 can keep up with the Q6600 and that's one of the old Phenoms (albeit the fastest one at 2.6GHz).

I'd rather have the Phenom II as well. Fantastic chip that is priced ridiculously cheap at the moment.
