I have nearly 20gb of music (most in MP3) and want to convert it all into Atrac so that i can put more on my HD5. Any ideas on how long this would take on SonicStage and if there is an easier/quicker way to do it?

You don't need to convert your MP3's just set the transfer options in SonicStage to convert to Atrac3+ when transfering to your player.

    As a guide I transfer 3000-3500 320k MP3 tracks to 64k Atrac3+ and it completes over night

so if i delete all my music on my HD5 and set SonicStage to convert all MP3 and WMA to Atrac+ then it will convert and transfer at the same time?

It will indeed, will also keep a copy of the converted files on your PC for faster future transfers (although if you have disk space issues on your PC you can delete these files manaually)

Yup, Tools/Options/Transfer/Transfer settings/Advanced tab then uncheck

"Delete the converted files from the hard disk after transfering"

Just a few more questions then im done :smashin:

    - What is the best Atrac bitrate for size and quality? My music is mainly around 128kbs in mp3..

    - How long would it roughly take to transfer all that music?

(I only have usb 1.1 :thumbsdow, any idea on how i change it to 2? )

    thanks :D

Ever opened up your PC? Not as scary as you think. Plenty of websites can tell you how to do it safely. They'll also tell you how to upgrade your USB PCI card ... which is basically a plug 'n' play affair, although you may also need drivers to tell your PC that the new USB ports are 2.0

Have a Google, then have a go. It's not all that expensive, and it's certainly worth doing before you start converting/transferring your MP3s to ATRACs. Trust me: SS takes long enough (several hours) to transfer ATRACs to an HD5 over USB 2.0 WITHOUT converting first! God alone knows how tortureously slow it would be using USB 1.1 ...

This thread reminds me of a niggle I have after converting mp3 to Atrac. I have to open each track's properties file to delete the mp3 version otherwise it only exports the mp3, and ignores the Atrac, to my HD5.

    Any ideas for a fix?

Looks ok and a good price. all you will need to do is pop the case open on your PC and just push it in a spare PCI slot, if your running WinXP you probably won't even need to install any drivers.

No. It's fine if I just use SS. However, I prefer to rip to mp3 first using other programs so that I have a backup library that can transfer to my family's non-Sony mp3 players. I then copy then import the files to SS. Even after converting to ATRAC, the transfer to the HD5 always takes the mp3 version rather than the ATRAC.

ok so i should be fine...

just 3 more questions before i convert and transfer:

    - What is better to use Atrac3 or Atrac3+?

    - Where is Atrac3+ on SS? I have 3.3 and cant find it under the transfer settings, all i have is loadsa of bitrates and some with (Atrac3) after them

    - Which bitrate should i use if most of my music is in mainly 128kbs but varies from the CD's which ive ripped, should i go for 66kbs or 105kbs to be safe for the higher quality?
