    Hello,

I want to be able to convert dvr-ms to another format, say avi or wmv. I have tried a few utils (dvr2wmv) and cant get them to work.

Does anyone know of a simple (automated would be even better) util that could convert the dvr-ms to another format? I appreciate the dvr-ms has really good quality - but i am not too worried about a slight decrease in picture quality.

    cheers,
    m.

You need the DVRMS Toolbox - converts to MPG and strips out commercials. Google will find it for you.

There is a registry fix that enables Windows Movie Maker to read DVR-MS. Then you can import in movie maker, put it on the timeline, and save it in a variety of Wmv quality. The Highest quality shows almost no quality reduction, but a huge saving in size.

In order to modify the registry, you need to cut and paste the text below inside Notepad, then save the file as something.reg (make sure it does not save it as .txt.

Then you simply double click the name.reg file, and it will update the registry for you.

I got that fix from the green button forum, and it works like a charm

Video Re-Do is an excellent app for editing DVR-MS shows, and then saving them out as MPG. Then you can use something like AutoGK for archiving, or any of the other many video convertors.

Tried the registry update - no joy - open up movie maker and try to open/import dvr-ms with no joy - keeps complaining that it doesnt recognise the format.

It appears that this fix simply doesn't work for some folks. Do you have the file WMM2DVR.DLL in C:\Program Files\Movie Maker?

Movie Maker in Vista does accept DVR-MS files as input.

I would guess that you have missed out on some update & it may not be as easy as just copying over & the file.

There is a very good article by Stephen Toub of Microsoft that details converting DVR-MS to WMV in great detail with a sample application http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms977847.aspx

Microsoft use this format because it provides the ability to use the trick play features (pause/rewind Live TV etc.). The open source MCE alternative Media Portal uses dvr-ms format files for just the same reason.

mmm, what version of windows movie maker and XP do you have?

I have XP service pack2, and Moviemaker 2.1.4026, and I have the Dll

If you do not have the latest version of moviemaker, try downloading it from the MS site, and see if you have the dll then

I too have XP service pack2, Moviemaker 2.1.4026, and I have the Dll

But, the registry hack still hasn't enabled the importing of DVR.MS files by Moviemaker 2.

checked the mce2005 pc that i have and the dll is there. so i did the registry hack and still no joy.

have all the udpates/versions etc, but still no work.

    any ideas ?

What exact error message are you getting when you try to open the DVR-MS file?

I am attaching the actual .reg file I used in case the copy paste introduced an error. The file extension must be changed from .txt to .reg

Sorry to take so long to reply. The error message I get is attached.

I have also double checked all relevant reg entries and they are correct.

    Timb64,

It all depends on what you use for the conversion and which decoders are on your machine.

If you cannot use a better decoder / encoder, free editing application like Virtualdub, will let you change the sync between Audio and video.

scrambler, sorry to take so long to get back, but I've been away.

I ran the check and can confirm that the codec is Intervideo 5.0.11.768 - standard with the Sony VGX-XL100.

Does this shed anylight on the problem?

VideoReDo is the absolute best solution here.
