i am trying to download some old movies to play on my dvd player on an anologue tv.
i have ' power to go' which has function to do this but requires files to be in avi format, the movies are in flv or mp4.
i am using w7 and firefox. which has download helper, and i have dl converter but it fails to work, it stops at leaving a dos window saying that it is converting but doesnt complete.
i have uninstalled and reinstalled but to no avail.

Are these old movies you're downloading out of copyright then?
If they're in copyright & not from a legitimate source- then this discussion is not allowed on the forums.
If you're downloading from a legitimate source (eg iTunes, Ultraviolet) then you won't be able to convert it easily (if at all) as it'll have DRM.

they're old westerns on you tube, i am assuming that they're out of copyright to be on there, they are 40's and 50's.

Easy thing would be to update (invest!) in a new DVD player or buy a media player like http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005NYOKC2/ If you have a SCART input you can still use it with the appropriate cable.

I have 100s of mp4 YouTube things and they all work great. Best to leave these formats how they are.

I use DownloadHelper too https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/

Free old films http://archive.org/details/feature_films and of course many many 1000s free on YouTube and elsewhere which are perfectly legal to watch.

I always assume these items are copyright free because they usually are. It's common sense.

357 westerns http://archive.org/search.php?query...ollection:feature_films AND subject:"Western" -all downloadable for free.

And to remind people of that new law in England and Wales -it may in fact be illegal to be illegal. So even if it's not illegal it might still be illegal. Just pop on the ferry to Belfast or up to Scotland via hot air balloon (other human-carrying flight technologies may be available in your area) and you'll be fine.
