Sorry Dfour, I have a new decision to make!! Anyone give their point of view, for the same price would you go for a SONY STRDB795 or a DenonAVR2801 2nd hand but in great condition?

Any thoughts much appreciated. I need to decide by the weekend.

    PS. For movies and music

I think you should refer this question to Mr. Greenspan, he seems to know a lot about conudrums! (sorry could not resist the temptation...)

The questions you need to ask is:-
can you live with only 5.1 (i think its only 5.1)?
Can you live without the new processing modes ?
Can you listen to the Denon to see if you like the sound? (esp in stereo)

Yeah it is only 5.1 but I only have 5.1 speakers at the moment. I can listen to it as it is a private sale from a friend, but it is exactly the same price as the Sony brand new. Which I havent listened to yet. I also know someone who has a Pioneer VSX-D711 for slightly cheaper.

The 2801 is elderly and personally I think if your Sony is reliable it will be at least as good for film. It will have the later codecs (I am not sure the 2801 even has Dolby PLII) and if you can live with the characteristic Sony sound it should be fine. And guaranteed to boot...

I think the sony easily, its a real giant killer now that they have the kinks worked out.
