hi,i wonder if anyone can help on this,im abit confused about what the contrast settting should be set at in general on an lcd, some people seem to say to max,but when you read about calibration on various sites including cnet.co.uk they say far lower than max,so what are your opinions on this, and also is there any setting which by turning abit lower or higher can improve viewing angles abit.

It shouldn't be set to max or any other particular setting but to the correct calibrated setting for the TV and source. This may result in max, mid or anywhere on the contrast scale of settings. You need to get a calibration disc like DVE for setting up a DVD player and TV. It gets a lot more tricky for satellite and freeview, because you don't have a test card to set up the display.

There is nothing you can do to improve the viewing angle of a display. It is inherent with the design and manufacturing process although displays do vary enormously from manufacturer to manufacturer.

is there a rule that setting contrast to max shortens the life of your lcd?
