2 weeks ago I received a letter and then a phone call from Sky informing me that my sky+ warranty was to expire. I refused to sign up.

Last week my sky+ went on the blink and wouldn't let me use playback or record functions.

It says " FOR YOUR INFORMATION 06-0"
    SYSTEM FAULT
Sky+ blah blah please call 08705 etc

I rang, we did some things, it didn't work, he tried to arrange a technical visit (£65) with costs on top.

    I've also tried hard reset.

    Coincidence or conspiracy?

    I'm dubious.

Has anyone else heard of this happening?

Has anyone got any ideas what the problem is or a solution?

    Many thanks,

Same thing happened to me with my old box just after we cancelled the repair plan. Here's how the conversation on the phone went....

ME: Hi, my Sky Box has stopped working

SKY: (After all the usual attempts to fix over the phone) We will need to arrange for an engineer to come and take a look.

    ME: Okey Dokey

SKY: I see that you don't have the Sky repair plan.

    ME: Nope

SKY: In that case we will have to charge you 60 quid for the visit

ME: Oh, just cancel my account then.

    SKY: What?

ME: Just cancel my account. I don't really need Sky anyways.

SKY: Er, mmm, Hold for a minute please.

    ME: Okey Dokey

SKY: (Different Voice) Good evening sir.

    ME: Hi

SKY: I believe that you have a faulty box

    ME: Yep

SKY: I see that you have been a customer for quite a while. In this instance I think we will be able to waive that call out charge.

    ME: Excellent. Thanks.

Works every time and not just for Sky. Vodafone wanted 100 quid from me to upgrade my phone until I threatened to move to O2 where I could get the phone for free. One quick word with the manager later and Insta-Free Phone.

    Phone call yesterday.

Me: Hi, I'd like my sky+ fixed please.
    Sky: That'll be £65 please.
Me: I'm not paying it thanks, I'd rather cancel my subscription.
Sky: Ok sir, I'll put you through to cancellations.
Sky: (Nice, Scotttish guy). I understand you want to cancel as a result of a service charge - is this correct?
    Me: Yes.
Sky: I'll just have a word with my manager.
    1 minute later........
Sky: Hello sir, I'm just arranging for a service engineer to come round to your house f.o.c.
    Me: Thank you very much!

It worked! I **** myself for a moment thinking they would call my bluff but they didn't. Thinking about it though it wouldn't make good business sense to lose a £500 per year subscrition for £65!

If the box is knackered I am refusing to pay for another. I'll let you know how it goes!

    Thanks,

A mate of mine wrote his car off a few days after his insurance expired and he was dumb enough to drive without cover.

A woman on TV had her house destroyed by a freak tornado - in London of all places - a day after her house insurance expired and she had not mailed in the renewal yet.

Both coincidences too - unless you think God works for Direct Line.

And just to keep things balanced , It did not work for me . They would not replace my SKY+ (fried modem) for free . It was however only the multiroom contract I had to cancel .
If you say you are going to cancel . you may have to be prepared to go through with it

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water!

"New" Sky+ box starting playing up and asking me to insert the already inserted viewing card.

Rang sky today. They are sending out a new viewing card this week. I'm sure it's the sky box myself.

I asked them if the box was new or refurbished. They replied that it was originally issued in 2005 (!) and that it was refurbished.

So far I have had very little sky viewing this month and I'm getting quite miffed off with the whole affair.:thumbsdow

    Solution?

Received the new viewing card today and surprise, surprise it didn't work.

Rang Sky, ready and willing to cancel my subscription and went through a 45 minute conversation with three different people where I was insulted, patronised and finally preached to about the wonders of sky.

Anyway, they came back with 3 choices,

    1. Cancel
    2. Free sky box
    3. Sky+ box with 12 month warranty for £49.

    Seeing as I will be re-credited a month's subscrition (£37 + £9.99 setanta) I thought I would go with the 3rd choice.

Installation is later this week. If it doesn't go well I am definately cancelling.

Note: I AM aware that the sky+ box IS the property and responsibilty of the user but at the same time I DO feel I'm paying over the odds each month. Especially with the reduced number of Prem footy games and increased number of repeats.

I really do hope Virgin, NTL and all those other providers can get their fingers out and start seriously competing with sky. It's quite scary just how dominant sky are.

Rubbish the number of Prem footy games has gone up this year on Sky Sports, the additional games last year were on Prem Plus which either required an extra subcription or PPV.

I knew someone would say that - yes you're right but if I want to see ALL the available matches (legally) I need to pay Setanta an additional £9.99 as well.

To give them their due, what Sky did do well was to have the season ticket last year.

But you must admit the repeats are bad.

Blame the EU for the football it was them that insisted that one broadcaster could not have all the matches in the UK.

As for repeats it doesn't bother me in the least, with so many channels it is not hard to find something to watch that I have not seen before. How else do you suggest they fill their scheduling with so many channels around, there just is not that amount of programming around.

I'm pleased to see that the footy IS distributed, reducing the monopoly that sky has over it's competitors, it's unfortunate that we have to further pay for the privelage though.

With the amount of money in subscriptions and advertising and the number of willing and able individuals out there I would hope that new and innovative programmes would be produced in the future. It's far too easy for TV channels to roll out the same old crap over and over again.

How many times can you sell the same Ford Escort on Discovery?

    How many channels show scrubs?

I agree with you in many ways but at the same time I don't want to spend the best part of £500 a year and not expect evolution rather than revolution.

Replaced a standard box to day for one of my customers. Sky rang him a fortnight ago asking him if he wanted to take out their warranty, he said no (rightly so!), 2 weeks later his box is stuck in standby!

It does beg the question 'do Sky know which boxes will not update when the new software is released?' I think so, thus making dosh out of people who by no fault of their own have a box that isn't compatible with the updates. No doubt there'll be a few more reports on Watchdog soon!

His box was a Thomson DSI 4101 but is now much happier with the Panasonic TU-DSB50 I sold him.

    Cheers, Franc

when new software is released, we get a memo round telling us so.

we then look out for the boxes in which were downloaded and if any have the regular symptoms i.e stuck in standby or system fault, then we will generally book in an engineer foc.

    thats the way it works.
and beliee me there is no "conspiracy" with the boxes and their warranty.
iv got 3 sky+ boxes and have done for 2 years (pvr3's) and each and every one of them works and has worked fine.

Come on GMT you're sounding like a politician, tell `em you don't pay any subs (if you still work for Sky), you also get free callouts and get the choice of the best boxes available.

As far as conspiracy, how can Sky justify taking warranty plans out with customers when they know they will give out free service calls regardless!

    Cheers, Franc
