I have had the Monitor Audio Silver S8 floorstanders for perhaps 13 years and I have been happy with them. They are currently paired with an Arcam A38 for music and a Marantz 7011 for movies, with the Arcam driving the fronts using pass through.

I was wondering about the Monitor Audio Gold 200 and PMC or perhaps the Monitor Audio Platinum (PL200 or perhaps 100) if buying used or ex-demo.

For PMC I would be considering the Twenty5.22 or 23 (or maybe ex-demo 24). I've also seen for sale a pair of Fact 8 for the same money as new Twenty5.23.

I've included the standmount to get some opinions but I am more likely to go with floorstanders.

Demo doesn't appear to be possible locally but I'll probably demo once I have narrowed down choices.

So, any thoughts regarding the above? The other speakers they will be paired with for movie duties are listed in my signature and will not be upgraded in the very near future.

    your room size ?

gold200 sound good in a 15 to 25mq room size and gold300/pl200 from 30mq and above

    but
it doesn't matter how big the woofers on the speakers you like are
    compared to your room size
as long as you are sure to use in your system
    a room eq correction device
    of the like of

    dspeaker

    dspeaker anti-mode x4

    or a

    dirac system

    ;)

Room size is probably just about 30m square. The only room correction I have used is Audyssey for movies and I'm not likely to use something for the integrated amplifier at this time but might in the future if necessary.

I'm mostly interested in thoughts between those speakers with the Arcam (or possibly a Hegel H160) and the resulting sound quality, which I realise is subjective but I'm looking for opinions.

    By 30m square you mean 5m x 6m = 30 square meters? Otherwise you live in a palace :)

If so, not a huge room so could get away with stand mounted.

This looks a good deal on someolder model PMC Twenty 23’s.

    PMC Twenty 23

Or some older ex demo twenty 24’s

lol, yes, 30 square metres. Definitely not a palace - more like the tiny shed in the abandoned end of the palace gardens...

For roughly £2-3K I've seen used Fact 8, new PMC Twenty5.23, ex-demo Twenty5.24, Platinum 200 (first version) or 100 (new version) and of course the Twenty5.22 (stands would take it up to the cost of the Twenty5.23) and some good deals on the earlier Twenty models (£2.2K for the Twenty.24, £3K for the Fact 3), although everything I have read says the Twenty5 are a worthwhile upgrade.

I'm not against using standmounts if the sound is a decent upgrade, although the Twenty5.22 being about the same cost as the Twenty5.23 once you've bought stands makes me wonder if it is worth going that way over floorstanders.

I'll be using my Arcam A38 but I'm considering the Hegel H160 because there is a good deal at less than £800 new, so it wouldn't cost much to upgrade (if that would be a worthwhile upgrade).

I can't stretch to the A49 at the moment - either my Arcam A38 or possibly the Hegel H160 if it's a decent upgrade as it is available for less than £800.

I haven't read anything but good reviews and it's a higher price point than the Arcam, but I would like to hear from anyone who has compared Arcam to Hegel.

The H160 (and Rost - lower powered but apparently rather good) have all the features I need and seem to get great reviews but there's no point changing if it's not appreciably 'better'.

Where did you spot the deal on the H160 out of interest?

Aha, you're the guy who loads the gun... lol

I think I'm very likely to get the Hegel as it will only cost me a couple of hundred at the most after selling my Arcam - it seems like a no-brainer, but I've been wrong before...

I'll be trying it with current speakers first - the new speakers will have to wait until I've recovered from Christmas, golf club fees (apparently a week after Christmas is the perfect time to ask for a couple of grand), corporate tax and personal tax... yay. The Sony cashback on my 65A1 will be most welcome and hopefully I'll be able to look at speakers in a month or two.
