I'm thinking of buying a DAV S550 but have just ot a few questions before I do. I'm hoping someone can give me some info before I go shopping.

    1. Is the subtitle problem sorted.

    2. Is the DVD player fully speced or is is missing features of sonys other standalone DVD players such as zoom etc.

    3. Am I choosing the right product or at this price should I be looking at seperates. I'm looking at the 550 over the 400 because it plays MP3s (€850 from a sony store)

    4. I have a sony KV32FX60 tv, a sony SLV-SF90 vcr and a panasonic sky box, I assume I won't have any problems hooking them up

I'll be greatful for any comments,
    David

    Buy separates.
If must be all-in-one, investigate JVC TH-V75R too. The JVC has more grunt, 6.1 and decent PQ.
Maybe you'll prefer a matching Sony but it's well worth thinking about separates instead.

    Try

    Yamaha DSP-AX630ES @ £289
    Mission 700 ( Black ) x 3 pairs @ £49 per pair
    Paradigm PDR-10 @ £179
    Sony DVPNS305 @ £119

Available at Richer Sounds, have a look www.richersounds.com

Good selection of kit ... a couple of queries though ... are the Mission 700's shielded? If not they will cause distortion of colour on the TV. If not, do RS do a matching centre.

You may do better with slightly cheeper amp (i.e. Marantz SR5200 - £199) and then spending the extra £90 or so on better speakers (maybe 771e or Wharfedale 8.2) especially for the front and centre.

Mission 700 and 771e not magnetically shielded.
    Mission 772 are @ £119.

Personally, six identical speakers are ideal for a uniform soundfield.
Three pairs of 772 will cost £357 so possibly out of budget ?

If possible, to use three pairs of 700 will cost £147, leaving an amount to spend on wall brackets / stands.

We both agree separates are the way to go :) .

Thanks for all the advice, but i'm in rip-off Ireland and ~ €850 is my limit. Also i'm a bit of a Sony fan but am now going to have a look at some stuff from their seperates ranges (dvd and ht systems). One of the main reasons i'll probally end up going for the DAVs is that my space is very limited

I purchased a DAV-C770 from Richer Sounds last Monday which IIRC is a bit more powerful than the 550 plus it’s a 5 disc joby. I took it back yesterday cos in my opinion the sound was garbage. I have gone back to my Pioneer DVD and am looking at separates.

    Just sharing my experience

[1] I was in my local Sony centre yesterday where a guy was returning his DAV-S550 as he said the sound was terrible. i personally haven't heard it.
[2] I need to get an all in one due to space restrictions. I am replacing a multiplay CD and was very interested in the Sony DAV-S770 but in another Sony Centre (Bluewater) I was told that the 880 had a lot better sound. I auditioned the 880 and it sounded fine to me (considering it was in Bluewater shopping centre) but I didn't get a chance to listen to the 770.

Is the DAV-S880 as bad as the 550 and 770?

Not in my opinion (I ordered one today  )

I guess with all comments on here and with reviews in general, it's all relative.

It sounded fine to me when I heard it but the proof will be once it's setup in my own room.

I'll post once I know for sure.

(where's the smiley for "nervous anticipation"?) ;)

DAV S550 is awsome for DVD's but no better than your average Dixons stereo for sound (i havent tried the Super CD format)

you can pick up a sony receiver for around 300 euro in dublin, and a sony dvd player for around 200 euro, leaving you 350 euro to buy some pascal speakers if you want to stick to sony.
or i`m sure argos do a sony receiver plus peaker package for around 600 euro, leaving 250 for a sony dvd!
if you could stretch a bit further you could buy alot better though.
