I've just taken delivery of a 42" PH9 and i thought i'd ask for people views on the best way to connect all the video up.

My (old) kit is listed in my sig below.

I have been advised to do the following:

    Toppy > RGB scart > RBG scart-VGA conv. > PH9

    Tosh DVD > component > amp > component > PH9

    PS2 > component > amp > component > PH9

Also, occasionally i would like to link up my MacBook Pro to it. What would be the best method for that without disturbing any of the above too much?

    cheers

    Hello leehaynes

Don't some of the Topfield units have YPbPr 'Component' out via SCART - may be worth double checking your User Manual!

If you are 'stuck' with RGB SCART and don't want to stick a SCART Board in the Display then you may want to consider an RGB2YUV rather than an RGB2VGA converter.

RGB2VGA is usually slightly sharper but you loose the ability to adjust/control the colours at the Display - if you go with RGB2YUV you can switch the source via the AV Receiver plus retain the ability to colour correct at the Display.

just checked the manual and the scart carries the following:

    Hello leehaynes

All you then require is a SCART to 3RCA cable (wired for Component 'YUV' video) into the AV Receiver - I'll assume you'll use Optical between the Topfield and the AV Receiver for multi channel audio.

i was lead to believe that the vga port on the panel was best to use. Is that not the case?
And i wanted the have the majority of my viewing (freeview toppy) through the best connection available (to me).

thanks for your prompt replies by the way :smashin:

    Hello leehaynes

The HD15(VGA) port on your Display is compatible with RGBHV and YPbPr 'Component' analogue video signals.

To use it with the RGB SCART Output of your Source you need to employ a relatively expensive Cable>Converter>Cable solution!

To use your Source with the Display it will be far simpler and less costly to set the Source to Output YPbPr 'Component' on SCART into the AV Receiver (SCART to 3RCA) or direct to the HD15(VGA) socket (SCART to HD15).

I cant see why there would be any advantage in using the Cable>Converter>Cable solution.

i did have a RGB 2 YUV conv delivered today with the PH9, and after thinking about it i was having second thoughts, which is why i've posted here.

Should i use it now that i've got it or send it back?

    Which will give better quality?
RGB scart out > conv > to VGA, or,
YUV scart out > 3RCA at amp > VGA (or direct, whichever is better)

    Hello leehaynes

I cant see any advantage in setting the Topfield to Output RGB on SCART and then doing an external conversion to YPbPr when you can simply set the Topfield to Output YPbPr already.

SCART RGB converted to VGA (RGBHV) 'may' give you a very slightly sharper image but as before looses colour control at the Display.

YPbPr from the Topfield direct to the HD15(VGA) socket vs. via the AV Receiver will be pretty much indistinguishable.

well that pretty much answers my question.

I think I'll go direct from toppy to PH9 using YPbPr>HD15(VGA) (presuming that YPbPr is the same as YUV?)

Then run 3RCA from the amp to carry the video from the DVD player and the PS2.

    cheers

Sounds a good plan - you can run various Picture in Picture modes that way too for non critical viewing.

YPbPr = YUV (in this discussion).
