I have a very old Humax IRCI-5400Z receiver used to pick up foreign stations (German on Astra) In our holiday flat in Spain. Being so old, it has a Scart socket and also the 3 RCA sockets (white, red and yellow). Unfortunately our new TV (which was a present from our daughter) doesn’t have a Scart socket or the 3 RCA sockets, only HDMI inputs. I assume there must be some adaptors available (Scart to HDMI) but is it as simple as that? Actually the TV also has a tiny yellow input called side AV but I can’t ascertain if that would work as I would need Scart to 3 RCA plugs and then an adaptor into one Jack plug to go into this AV side input. I’m in Spain at the moment and it’s absolutely hopeless trying to get any help even with my good Spanish. I even thought about buying a new receiver out here (in Spain) - again hopeless! So I shall have to obtain what I need when we get back to the U.K. and take it out to Spain. Hopefully someone can give me some advice - I assume a Scart to HDMI adaptor will be the solution but I’m no expert.

Did the anonymous TV not come with the required adapter? Usually with three or six phono sockets.

I assume a Scart to HDMI adaptor will be the solution but I’m no expert.

May work, have a look on Amazon or other sites.

Suggestion as I have used this company before but not a recommendation for product:

Many thanks. The TV (Telefunken) may well have come with an adapter but they used it for a few months before we took the flat over and there’s no sign of it anywhere. Rather than spend a lot of money on a Scart to hdmi converter I may well have to go for a receiver with an HDMI output. I bought a Technomate 5400 for U.K. use 2 years ago and it’s great but I wouldn’t want to spend that much for over here in Spain. Any ideas for a reasonably priced receiver (although just about everything seems to be unavailable at the moment due to Covid)?

Many thanks for your advice. Having read more about the problem, it seems as if one possible solution could be Scart to 3 RCA male plugs (relatively cheap) and then putting these into 3 RCA female plugs leading into one jack plug that would fit into the mini jack socket. To me it seems a reasonable possibility. It’s of course a pity my daughter didn’t consult with me first as I would have chosen a TV either with a Scart socket or the 3 RCA inputs instead of just the mini jack plug. By not supplying these I reckon Telefunken would have saved less than 10 Euros - this seems crazy to me. If this doesn’t work, I’ll investigate the other possibility for the HDMI input although I would prefer a non electrical solution.

Did your daughter actually say one was not supplied? As many seen to get thrown out with the packaging as people don't understand what they are for.

"In August 2006, it was acquired by the Turkish company Profilo Telra, one of the largest European manufacturers of TV-devices, with brand-owner Telefunken Licenses GmbH granting a license for the Telefunken trademark rights and producing televisions under that name. "

Why would you want to faff about with leads and adapter for phono and mini-jack socket (unknown size and connectivity). Surely, a one box solution (SCART to HDMI) direct connection is preferable. For a £10-15 quid outlay it seems like a plug and play no-brainer to me?

True but Scart to HDMI needs an electrical supply which I would like to avoid if possible - at least all the pictures of the equipment I’ve seen appear to indicate this.

If the tv has a USB port, this can sometimes be used to provide power (if the device works with 5VDC and less than 500mA)

This one for example;

Many thanks for all your replies. I’m not sure exactly what to do at the moment but if I were to go down the route of a new HD receiver, what would you recommend? I’m very happy with my Technomate 5400 I have at home in England but would prefer not to spend that much (but might do so if there’s no viable alternative) - however stocks of anything seem to be very thin on the ground at the moment.

Thanks for your reply. Setting a budget and sticking to it is not the absolute priority. My Technomate at home cost me around £150 about two, maybe three years ago and I would be prepared to spend around that much again but there may be alternatives that are as good for what we need - a basic HD receiver without a recording facility although a recording facility is often via a stick so that probably wouldn’t make much difference price wise. I’d be interested in any suggestions you might have. It’s to use in Spain to receive Astra (mainly German programmes) but as I can’t find any shop that specialises in these things, I would get it in England and take it out on our next trip.
