Connection & Mounting advice - Fuji 58

Hi all,

More questions, please bear with me im an AV novice

I have now settled my final decision and am saving the pennies wildly for the 42" Fujitsu 58 Series, a wall mount, standard Fujitsu side speakers running from the panel although I still dont know the model number (space constraints and not too bothered about surround but would like the option to upgrade in the future) and the Pioneer VSX-1016 receiver so I have easy access to connections.

Now all I need to know is the best way to link it all together!

What am I best channeling in the wall from the panel to the receiver? I assume everything will go from the receiver through HDMI (?) so am I best channeling two HDMI cables just in case I have a problem with one? Or should I channel the full selection of cables the panel will handle? (2 X HDMI, 2 X component, 1 X composite, 1 X S Video and 1 X VGA). Also what power cable does the panel need as i'll have to channel this with the rest of the cables.

Have measured where the panel will be mounted and cabling from the panel to the receiver will be about 2.5 metres (with about 1mtr give) so what is a good quality cable I should be looking at buying?

Also what is a good wall mount for this panel? And any tips for mounting/channeling?

Then what is the best way of connecting the following bits of equipment to the receiver?

  • SkyHD
  • XBox 360
  • PS3
  • Standard DVD player
  • Laptop

I will be buying the mount and the cabling and redcorating to keep the missus happy first, then the receiver, then SkyHD and then the panel around December time so by the time I get my Fuji it will hopefully just plug and play.

Thanks for all your help

hutch.

Good decision on panel i just got one 2 week ago their great.

connection view sky HD is HDMI unless youve got one of the first boxes that also do componant though i use HDMI. DVD i presum will be componant.

i dont know the Pioneer VSX-1016 receiver but if it can to switching between componant and HDMI then i'd just run 1 HDMI 1 componant from the box connect SKYHD and consols and mayby have separeat componant for DVD.

the power cable is a standard one but is located at the righthand side of panel.

good cables for compoant is important maybe not so important for HDMI unless very long runs though i'd still replace the included skyhd one.

I also don't know the Pioneer 1016 but from a quick look at the Panny website it looks to have the full monty of upscaling capabilities, meaning any input type will be upscaled and output over HDMI.

If that is correct, you only need 2 cables to the Fujitsu 58 series - a standard power cable and an HDMI cable. If you are going to be ripping the wall apart to do the job properly my advice would be to install 2 conduits, one for power, one for video cables. Today's video cables just may be redundant in a few years - with a conduit replacing them will be easy. The power cable won't change but best advice is to keep power and video apart, hence two conduits.

Why are you considering the Fujitsu speakers? With a good AV receiver (and it looks like you have that sorted) a far better answer is a decent programmable remote control which gets over "the rest of the family have to use the system and can't cope / be bothered to switch on the AV system" just to watch EastEnders / the News. The remote makes operating the whole system a breeze.

Wall mount for the Fuji - I suggest Fujitsu's own one as the back of the Fujitsu is slightly fatter than other plasmas - not all generic wall mounts will work without modifications.

Cables? - each to his own, many believe that expensive cables are all "snake oil" etc. - I don't fall into that camp and just happen to use BetterCables here : )

Hello hutch.

The Fujitsu side mount loudspeakers are the nattily named PSP1000H - no marketing frills there then!

I'm assuming your installing an AV Receiver to take advantage of Surround sound so don't forget to install Front Left, Centre and Right loudspeaker cables if your going to go (eventually) for wall mounted loudspeakers.

If your keen to ensure your seeing each Source at its best and want to make make best use of the AVMII video processing and don't intend to install an external Video Processor then lay in one each of Composite, S-Video, 3RCA (for YUV), VGA (for the PC) and HDMI if you have a source for each signal type.

Though keep in mind only the HDMI cable will carry audio - you need separate audio cables for the rest of the sources if you do want to use the side mount loudspeakers.

If your happy that your Composite and S-Video sources will look OK pre processed by an AV Receiver with Analogue to Digital conversion so that everything goes via a single HDMI cable then you may want to ditch the Composite and S-Video cables - though personally I'd want to retain the 3RCA cable as I wouldn't automatically entrust an AV Receiver with my SD and HD YUV 'Component' video sources.

The power cord requires an IEC 'kettle' type connector at the Plasma Display end - some folk will advice you get a fully shielded mains cable; others not!

Best regards

Joe

Thanks Piers

I've actually got a Harmony 885 so the remote is already sorted.

I'm purely drawn towards the Fuji speakers because I would like them mounted on the side of the screen and I have very little space at both sides of the screen. Is there any recommendations I can look at for alternatives?

Thanks for the info on the wall mount and cables, if im paying over £3K for a panel and receiver then the least I can do is spend a few quid extra to get some good cabling, I believe Mark Grant do some good stuff so that will probably be my first point of call.

Hutch,

What about something like the Anthony Gallo Micro or A'Diva spheres. Can mount them under the screen or even above it and aim them towards you.

It does seem a waste to have an AV amp and not have 5/6/7.1 surround sound!

Excellent, cheers guys your giving me lots to think about :)

I would rather I didnt entrust the amp to do too much processing so I think I will run one of each connection so I can at least get the same source to input.

As for the speakers the more I think about it the better it may be to have the sound coming from the amp and not the panel, at least I wont have to run separate audio cabling to the panel for each different input. Then it also leaves things open to pair the panel with a decent surround system when i've got the pennies, I can always put the speakers on the floor under the panel as a stopgap for a while and i've got some decent little Denon speakers from a hifi setup which would do the job.

Any links to the power cable (2.5m) I need? I'm useless at all this

After-market power cables... there is an old can of worms... Do you really think they make a difference Chambeaj? Then again, I presume that Fuji supplied those ferite cores for a reason...
