I have noticed in many reviews of dvd recorders that the maximum record length using hq is one hour. Does this mean that a three hour disc such as fellowship of the ring was recorded at the equivalent of ep, or are commercial discs recorded using some superior process?

p.s I've just realised i'd forgotten about dual layer. I suppose then that current machines can only record single layers.

Single sided single layer discs hold 4.7Gb of data

Single sided dual layer discs hold 8.5Gb data

You can't burn dual layer discs they have to be pressed at a replicating house from glass master.

No burner available can alter the laser head (it would need to re-adjust to write to the other layer).. and there are no Dual Layer DVD-R media out anyway.

I can't see the advantage of these,as you've still got to eject them and turn them over, which is the same as putting another single sided disc in.

And also, why has my Panny DVD-RAM got a built in fan?

But surely the laser head adjusts anyway to read the 2nd layer of DVD's?

no i can not either really unless the price drops where 2 normal RAMS cost more than a double

I might be making this up but wasn't there talk of DVD players with lasers above and below negating the need to flip

I've no idea why you can not write to dual layered discs it would be quite handy

Laser disc players can read both sides without flipping the disc, but they're not that quick, convenient though.

Authoring for DVD-9 (Dual layer) is not supported by entry level authoring programs. There are no dual layer burners or likely to be with advent of blu-ray etc.

You'll need an authoring program that can define the layer break & write the 2 DLT masters required by replicating house who will then create from that a glass master & press the copies.

It's expensive business & you can't do singles, you are talking about a minimum run of say 1000.
