I'm thinking of buying a component cable for my DVD to plasma. Does a component cable carry sound as well as video in a similar fashion to SCART?

No it doesn't. It only carries the picture signals.

As Ian J says in general a YUV Component Video cable is 3 x RCA (Phono) to 3 x RCA (Phono) for video only.

If your using the speakers on your PlasmaTV as a back-up to an AV System you could get a five core Multicore cable that will carry YUV Video + Stereo audio. I wouldn't normally use this cable on a high quality audio system but for use with your plasma speakers it will be fine.

Though you may find if you have 3 RCA inputs for YUV on your Plasma you still have to retain a SCART cable from your Source to the Plasma for Audio.

Best regards

Joe

go for QED cable if less than 2m, best quality you can buy!

If you discount all cables that don't begin with the letter Q you could well be correct
