    Hi,

Having just got a 42" Panasonic plasma I'm looking into a prog scan DVD player but am getting confused regarding the inputs/outputs.

On the back of my plasma I have for component in - RGB Hor/Ver Sync so 5 plugs in all. Then I look at say the Harmon Kardon DVD 25 and on the back of it for it's component out it has 3 plugs, Y/Y, Pb/Cb and Pr/Cr.

Could anyone enlighten me as I'm somewhat confused :-(

    Thanks

    Si

    Hi Si,

You need to connect the Y (green) output on the player to the G input on the plasma, the Pb (blue) output to the B input, then the Pr (red) output to the R input. You will probably then need to set up that input to accept component rather than RGB in one of the plasma menus. Hope this helps.

Thanks, that makes sense. What about the Hor/Ver Sync are they not required or optional extras?

    Hi Si,

The H and V sync connectors are used when inputting an RGB signal with separate sync. This is an alternate input to the Dsub 15 VGA input.

I got this from homecinemaheaven regarding the inputs/outputs for progressive scan when connecting the 42" Panny PW5B and the Harmon KArdon DVD 2550:

    >>>>
The sockets you mention are not component inputs, they are actually BNC RGB
inputs - these are not compatable with component inputs, unless you have a
dedicated component input (3 phono sockets) on a media unit, or you have had
a pcd upgrade on the plasma (it sounds like you have a business display
version rather then a consumer model, the business display models are
cheaper as they only have BNC, an s-video and PC D-Sub connectors normally).
    <<<<<

Should I be worried about this, ideally I'm trying to work out if the leads I will get with the HK will be sufficient or whether I'll have to buy new ones and in which case what lead should I be getting?

I think Dutch was correct in his first post. I have a Panny 4-series, and I am using the "R-G-B" three inputs on the back, connected to the "Y-Pb-Pr" outputs on my Arcam DV88+. There is a menu option on my Panasonic plasma to switch between RGB and component.

    Hi Si,

I don't know if you have BNC or RCA (phono) sockets on the plasma. I doubt the HK player would come with any component leads, so you can get your own RCA->RCA or RCA->BNC cables. I've bought some very good quality cables from the US at www.bluejeanscable.com but there are plenty of other suppliers around. Hope this helps.

They are RCA (Phono) plugs so I'll look into a reasonable quality RCA-RCA lead.

    Thanks
