    I am connecting my dvd player to my tv using an component cable.
    is a £50 to £100 cable a must or a £10 cable just as good.

    It depends on the type and quality of the rest of the components. The bigger the screen the more it will show up flaws which is why you should buy the bext cable that you can afford if you are using a projector. At the other end of the scale a 28" television won't show up as many flaws so you can get away with a cheaper cable.

    Likewise the quality of the dvd player itself will also have a part to play in the decision.
