Any help here would be much appreciated.

I am about to purchase my first proper av system and have had a scan thru these forums and across the web. I am pretty sure that I will go for the Pioneer VSX 501 as it appear to be the best I can get that is slimline and under £300.

I am using a fairly old DVD player - Pioneer 717 - and the rest of the equipment will include Sony 32 Widescreen, PS2 and Sky+.

Any ideas on a good speaker package - for about the same price as the amp (£300) - and is there anything else I should consider prior to taking the plunge?

I would consider the Mordaunt Short Premiere (for about £250-300) or the Mission FS1 package (for £300) if you after something a little more lifestyle.

The Mission comes with speaker cable, not sure about the MS set.

For a bit more £400 ish you can Canton CD1 setup, much nicer than MS prems in terms of looks and i think sound better but they are more expensive! see thread by rainbow6 on his system he bought with a similar budget just before Xmas!

I'm using the Canton Movie 6CX package with my 501 and I'm very pleased with it. Probably more suited to a small to medium sized room and very unobtrusive.

I believe Homecinemaheaven have a special on them right now (£249).

It's a 5.1 package though, so if you were looking for a 6.1 package you'd be looking at something like the Canton Movie 6.1 MX.

    Good luck!
