I've just purchased my first 50" plasma and now want to start thinking about speakers. I don't have a CLUE when it comes to this sort of thing! I've heard a thing or two about AV receivers. Would I need one of these or would an amplifier on it's own be ok? (...assuming the speakers don't just plug into the back of the TV?)
I suppose I'd have about £400 to spend at a push.

I am also interested in the Yamaha setup you mentioned, but I noticed something- the lack of HDMI. Are there any receivers in this price range that include HDMI? Even if you can recommend a set of speakers and a good receiver as separates, that would be a lot of help.
