Hi all, I am quite technically proficient but I'm not specialised in this stuff and don't know much about home theatre at all really.

    I am buying a big HDTV (for about £1000). It's a Sony KDL-40W4000.

I could really do with buying some kind of surround sound system but I have a few requirements.
    1) It has to be cheap, as cheap as possible..
    2) ....and yet it has to improve on the existing sound you get from just the TV
    3) It will be in a room with a hard wood floor and nowhere to disguise the cables, so I would ideally prefer to get a wireless speaker system.

So about the cost, I'd rather not spend about £100 and have something that is barely better than just listening to speakers built into the TV. I would much prefer to spend say £200 if it meant it would sound much better. But I have already exceeded my budget on the TV, so every quid counts really on this surround sound system... so if you know a perfectly "OK" set up for £90 or something, then please let me know :) I can stretch beyond £200 but really I am just a casual TV watcher, one film a week etc.. so I don't need the Bill Gates setup. Just something to improve on the (probably) already very good standard speakers built into the TV.

Also, I'm currently using a Sony DVD system, where my TV goes into the DVD and the DVD player has a built in amp, and it then it outputs to 4 little speakers. It sounds great, but the DVD player is crap. It doesn't play burned movies or AVI's or MPEG or whatever, and I'm not even sure if it plays MP3. So with my new setup, I am already going to buy a new DVD system, so I don't need a DVD/Sound system.

Lastly, I am going to be using an HTPC that I haven't built yet. I have converted my entire CD collection into MP3 and FLAC so I keep it all on a big hard disk, and I also have some films and home movies and photos and stuff, so I want to output that onto the TV and it will also give me web access on my TV. So if there is a way I could maybe use the PC to help make a surround sound system, please let me hear your suggestions.

    Thanks in advance :)

    Wow nice, thank you! :)

That is a lot more straightforward than I thought. Those two look really good too. I may hunt around for one that comes without a subwoofer as I'm not sure I'll be able to hide that. I'll know on Tuesday when I have an architect look at my room because I may be removing a wall and stuff.

If not I'll get the same kind of thing without the subwoofer, and if I can keep the little cubby I have now, I'll probably get that Denon :)

Either way, I know what I am looking for now and a general price guide, so thanks a lot for that :)
