Company of heroes Beta

Relic, the makers of,among other things, Dawn of War and The Outift have got downloadable beta for their new game -Company of Heroes, main site here. Its a hefty download at 1.6gb but its well worth it:smashin:

You can see the similarities between this and the outfit but this is obviously a lot more serious(but still has nice little touches of humour). The detail on the game is excellent, especially when you consider this is a beta. Its basically a multiplayer beta with a couple of maps.Any RTS fans out there should give it a try.:smashin:

edit:excellent game but all sorts of probs with the game crashing trying to join games,etc-obviouslly this is still a beta so these things are expected.Dont know why I play beta's.should just wait for the finished product cos I only get wound up by the bugs :(

Nobody else tried this yet?I cant stop playing the thing,if you value your spare time I wouldnt bother with it if I were you:suicide:

As long as you get past the dodgy lobby system without it crashing the game is superb.Obviously you have to enjoy this type of game to appreciate it,but definatley worth a look for any RTS fans:smashin:

Some screenshots, which although are nowhere near something like BF2 you have to admit for an RTS they are pretty decent, escpecially when you bear in mind how far you "zoom in":

Its nice that everything is destructable to,so every game has the potential to be different.I have to say though you will need a pretty beefy pc to run on max settings,it runs nice and smooth with everything on medium on mine.Shame I cant crank it up to ultra to really appreciate it:(

New patch is out 1.16

I have no connection or crashing problems - its working fine

It is alot of fun too - I've been playing Rise Of Legends on line, and Company of Heroes is another good one to play - lots of fun

:smashin: Good stuff isnt it.I havent tried it since the latest patch yet,but the only problems I was having were the connection problems in the lobby etc,so if they have sorted that out it should be spot on:D

I am hoping that in the full retail version you will be able to limit/exclude some of the weapons/vehicles as some just seem a bit overpowered and the infantry become almost obsolete as the game progresses.I suppose they need to be though or games would last for days:rolleyes: They last long enough now, lol,I cant imagine a game with just infantry,it would probably take a whole weekend if you were playing anhialation :rotfl:

I have been playing the capture strategic points wins option and its good

I think annilihation would be too hard as the enemy base is well guarded

I found that tanks need alot of petrol points to make, and I never seem to have alot of them so never have alot of tanks

I like the sniper - I have put a sniper near a point and camouflage him, then he snipes anyone trying to take over the flag again

Also the heavy machine gunners in buildings is great

I found its a shame that buildings just turn into rubble and you can't repair them, because then there is less cover for the infantry as the game goes on

Perhaps if they had a repair building, this would increase the infantry effectiveness as the game goes on

Just had a couple of games and didnt crash once, not even getting that stupid connection error in the lobby anymore:clap:

It's mad how different every game is depending on the tactics different people use:D Roll on the full game:smashin:

The demo size is huge! Not sure whether to give this a try:

1) I'm not too fond of RTS games, and
2) I have no idea whether it will run on my PC :(

1) I'm not a massive RTS fan either but I love this game.
2)My pc is by no means top end and it runs nice and smooth, although obviously I cant have all the bells and whistles turned on but it sstill looks pretty impressive.

It is a big download but thats because its not really a demo, its the Beta-pretty much the full game but limited to 3 or 4 maps;Id give it a go if I were you.If you dont like it,it hasnt cost you anything anyway;)

Cheers mate will give it a go. The last RTS I played was Sudden Strike, which I really enjoyed until I got bored around half way through. Hopefully with all the fancy effects turned off I still should be able to run it (although that trick didn't work for Flight Simulator X!)

Loved The Outfit on 360 so really want to try this, don't think the Demo supports Online Play and this is where The Outfit shines, any chance getting in on the Beta?...

I think the beta is closed now,but I believe if you purchase the game they give you a key so you can play the beta till the games released at the end of the month.Ive already got mine on pre order;)

COH and The Outfit are both made by Relic so theres obviously similarities but trust me,they are very different games.I think the Outfit was very tongue in cheek and although COH has some nice little touches of humour with the voices its a lot more serious on the whole(no riding round in wheelbarrows here Im afraid:D ) and requires a lot more strategy.IMO,this is the serious version of The Outfit and very good it is to:smashin:

Isn't there a single-player demo around somewhere though?

Played the full demo today.
I have to say that I love this game. The deffence of Carentan map is soo good.
I love building up deffences to then fight off the german counter attack. In most RTS games you usually just build up an offensive force then attack en-mas, but in this game there seems to be more strategy involved.
Really well made. The only thing i hate is how the germans steam roll you with their bloody tigers and the constant bloody artillery! :D

Nice review from IGN:

9.5 Presentation
Like a good soldier, Relic has applied a liberal amount of polish to Company of Heroes. All details have been given great amounts of detail and it shows.
9.5 Graphics
One of the best looking real-time strategy games in recent memory. The fact that they managed so much detail in the units and in the destructible environments is amazing.
9.0 Sound
Battlefield sounds serve to pull any comers onto the battlefield and into the chaos of warfare. Voice work in acknowledgements and cutscenes is very good and the score can be a powerful addition.
9.5 Gameplay
Campaign missions are almost perfectly paced and exciting from start to finish. Multiplayer and skirmish are exciting and challenging. There are very few noticeable flaws.
9.0 Lasting Appeal
Multiplayer and skirmish are excellent and will certainly extend the life of this game for most players. The campaign is good length and deserves a second playthrough at higher difficulty.
9.4
Outstanding OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)
