I am looking for a good quality compact that has both LCD screen AND viewfinder as I am really frustrated by how difficult it is too see in daylight with some of these LCD screens. I need it to be able to shoot HD video as well as having good battery life.

My budget is £250 max but I am happy to consider older models that may now be reduced in price or even available second hand?

    Thanks

Viewfinders are like hens teeth now and where a camera has one there is normally no shooting info to be seen and you can't tell where the camera has focussed on. I bought a Canon G12 because it had a viewfinder but I never use it! I do, however, use the vari-angle screen a lot which does help in bright conditions.

If I was buying now I would probably look at a fixed screen, but fit an LCD folding shade.

Thanks for the replies but the G12 is £399 on Jessops website-my budget is £250ish. Is there an earlier model which maybe has come down in price that does pretty much the same?

There are dealers who specialise in 'grey' imports. Flash Cameras (Kerso on Talk Photography Forum) sells US sorced models for around £300 with a 12 month UK warranty. I bought mine from HDEW Cameras for around the same price, also a US model, but I think they mainly source from Hong Kong.

The previous model - G11 - can probably only be bought second hand now.

I've looked at the reviews for the G12 which are good but in video mode it seems you can't zoom or use AF so that is no good to me as I want this to replace my video camera as well.

It also seems to say with some of these reviews that the optical viewfinder is almost useless?

What do they mean by this?

    Thanks

The optical viewfinder being useless - probably for the reasons I mentioned above.

If you can stretch a little consider the Fuji x10, there is a thread a couple below this one with a few user comments and pictures, Fuji were doing referbs for under £300 recently. I got mine and it was like new, another users was a little battered but Fuji took it back ok.

Thanks for the info. I went into Jessops just to see if they had anything else and I asked about Bridge cameras as well and some of them he said have electronic viewfinders but again some work well and some don't. Any suggestions down that line. I se that the fuij finepix ones seem to be the cheapest but are they any good?
