OK, excuse my ignorance, I'm sure it's been covered before - but what exactly are colour bars?

I got the 2 disc set of Magnolia at the weekend and the first extra feature is Colour Bars - what looks like an old test card! After a couple of minute outtakes are played - what does it all mean?

    Hi,

The "Magnolia" extra you refer to, was a little joke for DVD users from director Paul Thomas Anderson.

However, Colour Bars themselves, are to aid technicians and home cinema users set up the colour spectrum of their TV's and/or projection systems correctly.

Sometimes Anchor Bay DVD's have them, but that's all they are. The TV Testcards from both the Beeb and C4 (when it used to air from about 4pm-Midnight) was also for the same purpose, as well as to help the TV companies make sure they were broadcasting material correctly.

    Hope that helps you out.
