It is being reported that Colin McRae may have been in a helicopter that came down near his home this evening. Report here

If it is true then my thoughts go to his family. Without doubt he was the greatest rally driver ever, and was a real gentleman. A very humble man, he was devoted to his family.

It says something that long after his retirement he was still used to market rally based racing games, Dirt being the latest incarnation.

    RIP!

BBC don't seem so sure, just mentioning it was near his property. Always been a big fan of Colin, condolances to those related to the deceased (whomever they may be).

The Times Online seem to think it's both Colin McRae and his son, and another unspecified adult and child.. :(

Yeah, this is just terrible news. We've already lost Richard Burns and Michael Park in the last few years. I'm Just praying to god that it's not Colin but I don't think it's looking good. The most exciting and naturally gifted rally driver the world has ever seen. :(

Sorry to hear this, really sorry. These rally drivers seem to have no luck, first Richard Burns, now this. My thoughts are with his family.

If anyone thinks that this will stop Codemasters from releasing rally games they'd be being a bit silly. They'll simply find another name to put on the cover or release them without one, as they do in other countries.

They could also continue publishing with his name on the cover too. Maybe that would be what he wanted.

How selfish can some people be. Is there anything that happens in your little world that isnt centred around "me me me me me".

Colin was a legend in modern rallying. He did so much to progress the sport over the years he was involved, both before and after he was a driver and he will be sadly missed in the rallying community.

And I'm sure there will be another game, just for YOU.... don't panic.

Damn! ... What a sad loss for all his whole family and the country. One of our few genuine world class sports stars gone at a very young 39 yrs old.

I always liked Colins matter of fact, down to earth attitude when you seen him being interviewed or the camera caught a shot of him without him realising it ... swearing away there like every other normal bloke you know. :) I genuinely nice guy it seemed.

R.I.P. and condolenses to the family.

I can definatly see codemaster's still using his name with the Family's permission after all the guy is (or was 'TBC') a legend!

They fear that his son was also with him :(
