Hi

I want to connect my network player to my amplifier using a to digital output using a digital coaxial cable.
But I have read they won't transfer lossless, is that true?
If so would I be unable to use FLAC?

Cheers

Chris

Yes it's true, they don't have the bandwidth for lossless codecs like DTS-HD master. Only HDMI has enough bandwidth. Highest quality supported is DTS-HD up to 5.1.

But it's not true for music formats. Depending on the hardware digital co-ax can easily support music at 192khz 24bit which is far in access of CD bit rates.

Besides stereo audio is actually bit streamed as PCM data, the music player does the conversion and unpacking then bit streams as PCM via a digital connection.
