Nice review thanks, Simon. Got my copy the other day, likely to watch tonight. This will be my first ever viewing!!! Potentially a shame with the lack of immersive audio but if it really is down to Spielberg not wanting to tinker with it, got to respect his decision.

The strange thing is that ET does have a new DTS:X immersive audio soundtrack, so it's a shame that Close Encounters didn't get a new Atmos mix like Blade Runner, there are so many scenes I can think of where the use of overheads would be awesome.

But at the same time, ever since the days of DVD we have had a choice of audio tracks. This UHD BD could have defaulted to Spielberg's preferred track, but also given us the option of Atmos / DTS:X! :)

Currently $14.99 on Amazon US. Other sites have taken issue with the increased colour density of this transfer/remaster, because the previous remaster was already pretty incredible and a touch lighter, but that is a cheap price for this!

I had a quick 20 mins with this last night, keeping it for the weekend. I agree, looks gorgeous, grain never bothers me, its meant to be there, it would look odd it it had of been presented grain-less.
Colours are amazing. I'm watching on a 65", but would love to see this projected again.

Simon, what are your thoughts after watching on the tv v projector, assuming HDR looked much better on tv but projector provided greater overall enjoyment due to immersion?

I do have a question though (I was going to post on other threads, but this review is timely, so slight hijack :) ) and interested to know if its the source or LG tv.
I have an LG C7 and a Panasonic UB400, I watched the first 20 mins or so with the HDR preset Cinema Home (User), haven't changed any of the preset settings.
The scene when the mother comes out of her home to search for her son, the darkened sky is lit with the UFO lights and it fades to darkness. When lit, its an orange red / bright white glow, what I noticed what was like dancing grain/pixels in the lightest parts. As we change scene, it disappears. I noticed this on Dracula UHD too on one scene, facial closeup, camera staying on subject for 6-7 seconds and her skin had what looked like moving grain/pixels. No big deal, but was interested to know if anyone else has seen this?

Edit:I am not complaining about grain, that's natural, this is slightly different and only noticeable on specific shots - maybe its simply the grain against a light background??

      Thanks.

A choice is always good. So perhaps another reason other than he just didn't feel it was in keeping with the film?! As Steve just mentioned ET got the DTSX treatment which adds more confusion. I can't find any explanation on the net anywhere. Thinking about it more, it's a 40th anniversary edition too, so perhaps more disappointing than I initially thought.

At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist perhaps it has something to do with Spielberg's connection to DTS. Universal use both DTS:X and Dolby Atmos on their UHD Blu-ray releases but Sony only use Atmos. Perhaps Spielberg would have authorised a DTS:X mix if it was an option but whatever the reason, it's a real missed opportunity.

Loved the 4k picture, the extras are great, but yes - if ever a film needed a proper immersive mix, it's this one. It's mostly a film about things flying around over your head for goodness sake.

Great review Simon. This is this the one release that has made me want to change my beloved PJ for a FauxK one, because the downscaled picture really doesn’t look great.

I imported the 3 disc set from the US (WOWHD), for a mere £17 inc postage. The UK base set lacks the extras disc, and as it's region free, it's well worth importing.

Lovely transfer as mentioned in the review. With Blade Runner, ET, Leon, and now this, these classic releases are making a mockery of modern upscaled 4K releases. The benefits of analogue tech all these years later. Love it.

Delivered from Amazon UK it's £19.99 with prime versus £17.27 delivered half way around the world from Amazon US.

Companies love to pull our pants down here in the UK but for this film they're down at my ankles with a bottle of lube in hand

I'm slightly gutted I missed the theatrical rerun though - this would have been amazing at the cinema.

For peeps with AVRs that are DTS Neural X capable I'd suggest giving it a shot on this. Although not strictly perfect it does add some height to the soundstage .

This has to be one of the wife's favourite films and I have to agree that the oiginal soundtrack with Neural:X applied sounds pretty good.

Great film, watched it with friends on holiday a few weeks back, dvd, small flat screen tv, speakers (on tv) straining with everything and enjoyed it as much as seeing at the fleapit cinema many years ago.

We watched the “final cut” version which benefits in my humble from more mountain building in the kitchen and a better shorter ending.

For great background on the making of try

      https://www.amazon.co.uk/Spielberg-Truffaut-Me-Actors-Diary/dp/184023430X

It was either in that book or a sep article I remember Spielberg saying he was fed up with scenes immediately prior to any optical effect in films going blurry (as a result of composite re exposure) so to solve this he blew up all the main photography deliberately increasing the grain to match the effects shots (Doug Trumbull being keen on 65mm would keep them looking pristine).

Great to think that, even after all that, the film can retain grain and still look good in 4K.

Just watched the first thirty minutes of CE3K.

What a seething mass of grain and noise. It is beyond my comprehension how this could have been released. It really is quite appalling. The sad thing is, that if you peer through the murk, there is evidence of quite a nice picture beneath.

Even allowing for the fact that my OLED TV is exacerbating the grain; this beyond sub-standard. When my eyeballs have recovered; I'll watch the rest of the film. But based on what I have seen so far; this is potentially the worst quality UHD film released so far.

Have you turned sharpness and image enhancers down?
On my oled the grain is more noticeable but it’s meant to be there and I think the image is really nice, best it’s ever looked.
My only issue was some specific scenes when you see what looks like grain that the opposite colour from the scene, so very white light has black pixels going crazy.
Would I swap it for the Blu...no chance

My TV (LG E6) is set on the AVForums recommended settings.

I appreciate that any film shot on celluloid is going to have inherent grain; I have no issue with that. I'm not expecting a super clean digital image. However the grain/noise that I see is totally unlike that I experienced when I watched this film (albeit a long time ago) at the cinema. What I'm seeing is not the grain I expect of celluloid; but noise. It's not natural; it's an artefact.
