Great review Cas, but as you say about the decision not include the Atmos track( assuming of course there ever was one? Lol) I'm going to hold out and prey that the US release gets one.

This was a great film, sometimes you forget that thinking of Stallone comes with a certain image stereotype that he often stepped out of and made some great thrillers and dramas.

Thanks for the review Cas, pretty much agree with you on this one. I'll say the same here as in the other Cliffhanger UHD thread.

I watched this last night, what a great disc!

Happy to see some of my favourite catalog titles getting the love they deserve. Very filmic looking and subtle use of HDR and colour. A massive improvement on the previous drab and smeary looking releases.

Used Dolby upmixing to bleed some audio into the heights which improved the sound field. I needed to bump the volume 3 clicks over my usual level, but overall very satisfying.

It's obviously not perfect, nothing is. There were a few instances in bright daylight scenes with mainly sky and snow where it did look momentarily a bit rough. But you know what, I was enjoying watching this guilty pleasure of mine so much I really don't care.

Will I swap it for the US Sony release next year if the encoding is done better and to try out an Atmos remix (assuming it has one)? Maybe, maybe not :)

      More like this please

Yeah it's a great prologue and really does set an atypical tone for an action movie start.

On one hand it's great they're releasing some of these 'lesser' titles on 4k blu. On the other, I wish there were some more significant releases on the horizon.

Cliffhanger, Air Force One, Tomb Raider 1 & 2 etc etc...I mean come on!

      Cas,
General concensus over on another site is that this UK StudioCanal release has many issues with the picture quality...
You mentioned the "contemporaneous" US Sony release which I am very confident, going by their excellent track record so far, that these alleged problems on the UK disc (macroblocking, compression issues etc) will not appear on the Sony disc.
Also factor in the US release will have Atmos...then is there really any point in not touching the UK StudioCanal will a bargepole!????

As you can tell from the review, I found the picture excellent. It's a 1990s film that looks superb after having been given the full fat 4K treatment. I'd find it hard to believe that there will be any difference between this and the US disc on the picture front. I've compared the 4K and Blu-ray discs for the opening prologue, and it's a significant step up. I don't see how anybody could complain. But I do realise that screen grabs can be inherently misleading, so I'm sure that does a lot of the talking. I also know full well that there's 'another' forum where they really do not like us or our reviews very much, and seem to want to spend a great deal of their lives dissecting them. That's fine. At least they don't bring that over here too much anymore. For me, the only deciding factor is whether or not you're likely to ever want Atmos. If you're not, then this is a great disc.

Great review Cas. This film is a 10/10 for me, seen it more times than I can remember and the opening sequence gives me goose bumps everytime. I too can't see how the Sony disc being released in January can be superior, but I'll probably get it anyway to compare and keep the better disc as it'll have Atmos as you stated.

Well given Shamsung shafts every purchaser of AV, my k950 Atmos soundbar does not get updated to DTS-MA and sucks at vanilla DTS I’ll be having the Atmos import.

Thanks for the review Cas and the info about the US version.

It can be a thankless task reviewing discs I know! Good point about the screen grabs too- couldn't agree more. Personally I check out several reviews and compare before making an informed decision.
Sometimes the US releases are superior, and sometimes the UK ones (UK Sony release of Blade Runner 2049 is better than the US WBros release and the UK Fox release of Braveheart looks very promising too!)
On your average sized tv too any differences will hardly be noticeable to 99% of us!

Great review Cas, a guilty pleasureof mine which I saw in the cinema on it's opening weekend.
I agree it makes most other 'mountain' films like Vertical Limit and Everest a bit boring in comparison.

      @Casimir Harlow
Great review & fun re-cap of a great Sly film as you note. Really pleased it’s a worthy 4K remaster & bodes well for the Rambo transfers.

Cliffhanger is one of those films you can watch over & over though isn’t it. Even if you have it on Blu Ray or 4K & you flick onto it on a tv channel, you end up watching it ... that’s the mark of a great classic.

Great cast in this film & some classic one liners (also a la Die Hard)

(Gabe burning the money) .... it costs a fortune to heat this place :rotfl:

Great film - watched it many times back in the day.

Fun fact - the film makers were sued by the manufacturers for the 'failure' in the opening sequence because it can't happen - but made people wonder think it could - or at least IIRC

I doubt if you are going to pick up any differences between DTS 5,.1 core at 1.5 Mbps and DTS-HD MA 5.1 although it is nice to have support for modern audio formats.

Possibly but the sound is very quiet and pretty low dynamic range. Bass is not great either. Dunno why it’s so bad compared to an amp’s DTS 5.1.

I could just be spoiled with Atmos now of course.

Thanks for the clear unbiased review which I always find to be the case with AV Forums material. Whilst there has to be some personal opinion involved (dull without it) and you invite discussion and even disagreement on the forum comments I find it amazing that other sites would try to “diss” you on your work? Says more about them than you.

A brief comment on bias, in the distant past Cambridge Audio used to get stellar reviews from What HiFi when Richer Sounds took out monthly 15 page adverts, less generous with their stars when Richers took a break from the ads for a while!??

I played my USA import Blu ray first to compare the picture quality in comparison to the new UK release by Studio Canal.
My amp was set to the exact same volume level and left untouched when swapping discs and the blu ray blew it out of the water in volume levels !
The SC 4K release volume level is a lot lower in volume level despite it being in the same DTS MA.

Well the sucker doesn’t play on my Samsung UBD K8500 neither does Studio Canals Prince Of Darkness. Has my mate check them on his K8500 and he has the same problem. Tested the discs on my Xbox One S and they both play no bother. Question now being, is it a Studio Canal authoring issue or a Samsung firmware issue?
