RRP on the Paradigm is £5499 so even off demo it's not going to measure up to 1600 euros. With the best will in the world, ill be looking for £2999 off demo.

The Paradigm would wipe the floor with the Arendal & SVS. You couldn't really compare them, it's in a totally different league.

    Hello

Long time lurker here. I am considering spending money I do not have to switch my two channel system (CA 651a plus dac magic 100) into a home theatre system. Would only be 5.1, although initially 3.0. until moving out of an apartment into a house in 15 months time.

In your opinion how much of a difference is there when listening to music between the AVR550, the 3070 and last last year’s 3060?

As a reference point for speaker level something like the Dali Rubicons. Currently have Zensor 7s but not entirely happy with them so would look to upgrade at some point.

    Hi Jeff83,

Replacing a hifi with a home cinema and maintain the quality of music reproduction can sometimes be difficult. Mainly because everyone's perception of what quality is, is different. A lot of hi-fi shops will shudder at the mention of EQ and cinema products running a hifi system. The argument comes from the fact that "Hi-Fi Sound" a lot of the time bears no relation to what could be described as technically accurate. Warm, bright etc etc etc describes different phrasing of different products, combining these together to give a sound one person likes.

I've jumped through this hoop myself recently. I have had a hifi for the past few years in a separate room of the house, Audio Research Tube Pre Amp, Arcam Power amp, Harbeth speakers & Turntable. I love the sound and dont want to sacrifice it. The difficulty for me is im now im converting the garage and this hifi needs to become and Atmos system. I have decided to essentially bolt on an integrated AVR just to do the surround channels, add IR control and Sub pre-outs. This then doesn't touch the Hi-Fi at all, no matter what anyone says if you want to maintain the quality of your hi-fi, it needs to be separated out one way or another, within reasonable financial perameters and of course different peoples perceptional differences.

The comment about not being happy with the combination of the CA and the Dali's will either be down to their acoustic signatures clashing for your preferred taste, or the room affecting the sound through less than ideal positioning of the speakers. As this is somewhat of a personal perception my advice would be to hear some kit for yourself. Generally if you like the sound of something in stereo with music, it will work for you with a cinema application.

If we are just talking sonically, the Arcam is head an shoulders above the Yamaha's for music reproduction. It has a very clever EQ system which can both combat problems with acoustic positioning and the room but also neutralise to some extent forced phrasing from manufacturers. You do need some knowledge of basic acoustics and an ability to read an acoustic graph, but essentially you can tailor the sound to your ear. Ideally you should be trying to compliment the sound of the system rather than fundamentally alter it. If you push DIRAC too hard it starts to lose it's finesse. The vast majority of people who haven't liked the Arcam AVR's I can pretty much guarantee that it wasn't set up correctly for the specific person listening, including the average review What HiFi gave the AVR390. You would be wise to try an Arcam first or at least get a demonstration of it along with an explanation and run through of DIRAC by a trained calibrator. You need to invest some time in the Arcam to get the best from it, if you do you will get brilliant results. If it has negatives, it is somewhat feature light with very basic menu's.

The advantage of the Yamaha is that it is a bit of a swiss army knife, and is feature rich. Fundamentally it isn't a bad amplifier at all, and is somewhat easier to get results from given the fact the Auto EQ system is easy to use. The Yamaha has a very good PEQ but it is somewhat fiddly to use meaning small EQ tweaks can sometime be difficult to control, to get the best from this you also need to have run an EQ profile of your room and some may argue this is even more complicated than the DIRAC EQ. If I remember correctly I wasn't a huge fan of the sound out of the 3060, I found it a bit muddled. When I had the 3070 at home It performed much better. A quick trawl through my old news section may bring up the reviews I did a while ago.

If you need to have a chat about it in person just pick up the phone i'd be happy to talk to you about the options.

    Dan
