hi guys, can anyone help me out here. I am looking to buy the Civil War by Ken Burns but I've noticed there are two versions R1 and R2. R1 is 5 discs and R2 is only 3 - the R2 is a lot cheaper than R1 and I wondered if there was a difference in the collection i.e anything missing due to it only being 3 discs ?

    hope you can help

I didn't know there was an R2 version, but if it's like Ken Burns' Jazz, The "uncut" version was the R1 one. Check the run times - with Jazz the R1 is 40%+ longer

hi wilber - apparently the R1 version runs for 660 minutes and the R2 version runs for 690!!

i just don't see why R1 is on 5 discs if R2 is on 3 - there's a big difference in price also and I would prefer to buy R1 but it doesn't asppear to be cut going on the mins total!

The R1 version has all the extras and is in DD 5.1 the R2 has non of these hence the price difference.

I have the R1 and it is very nice.

Not sure about prices now, but when it was released, NorthamericanDVD had the cheapest price inc shipping to the UK.

The recent interviews with Shelby Foote and the other contributors about the impact the show had on them and the scene specific commentary by Ken is pretty interesting.

Great series, presented as good as we're gonna get it and if you liked it on TV enough to buy it, you may as well get the best version of it.

    Cheers

Hear Hear, makes you wonder why the R2 version is substandard though - with Jazz, why only offer the cut down series?

try to order from somewhere "customs friendly" like dvdsoon - you'll be looking at a customs fee of £15+
