I currently have one of the best av set ups that normal money can by. It includes 6.1 DTS-EX setup.

I just watched starwars at the cinema and the surround sound steering was so much better than my setup.

So the question is how many discrete channels does a cinema use?

My Denon AV amp can use upto 9 speakers (with 6 rears). Would the extra 2 speakers make much of a difference when they are only playing the same sound as the other rears?

    Cheers in advance
    Steve

most cinemas have the same 5.1/6.1 setup, just lots of speakers on the same channel, very few have sdds 8.1 (sony dynamic digital sound?), ive never heard that though. Its probably because it was a cinema, designed for that purpose by experts (supposedly), what is your current kit? (other than "one of the best money can buy"?!)

I didn't say the best, just the best normal money can buy.

    The set up is

Denon AVR 3802 - AV amp
    Denon 2800mk2 - DVD player
    Sharp Z9000 - projector
Monitor Audio GR20 - main speakers
    Mission 7C2 - centre speaker
    Mission 7C1 - rear speakers
    Mission 7ds - rears

It sounds great in AV mode.
