Has anyone heard both the Velodyne CHT15 & the Servo 15?

How does the performance of them compare. One day I'll join the HGS club but right now one HGS will pay for half my carpet :)

The way I see it my choices are between the CHT15, Servo15 or Possibly a pair of S/H Big Rels

Mark.

Mark,

My advice to you is if you want to clean, deep bass with little distortion then discount the REL route (I'm guessing you're thinking of 2 x Stratas or Storms?).

As for the CHT 15 vs Servo 15, not sure if ANYONE on this forum has heard them side by side, so people will be biased to whichever product they have.

Personally I went the Servo 15 route, and have been very happy. At £185 less than the powerbuy price for the CHT (and you can also put the paradigm on your credit card if u need to), and with a spec sheet which is more powerful, bigger amp and extending lower than the CHT....well to me that was a no-brainer.

The velos seem to be all the rage atm....Richers have been slagged off bigtime on here (I had some hassle getting mine from Richers, I should have bought it mail order rather than going thru my local store), but still to me the hassle was worth the lower price and (on paper) the performance.

Cue lots of people talking about how good the CHT 15 is;)

EDIT: Ooops, in my excitement i forgot to say anything about the Servo 15 or CHT-15.
Mark....alas, i have not heard either...although i'm sure either one would make a welcome addition to your 'aircraft hanger' sized room...Infact, as it's a big room...go for a big sub......

I like to hear both the Servo 15 & CHT-15 sometime.

Right now that's a little out of my range. Not off my wish list though.

Still have Screen, Curtains & Blinds, Carpet(ouch!), Plumber, Carpenter, Electrician, Cables, Furniture & more to pay for so have to make some compromises.

CHT15 or Servo15 would I imagine do for now.

Not sure about the BIG Rel's (quickly dons flameproof suit) but I have to say I've not been overly impressed with my Strata II in my current room, though to be fair it is situated in the only space in the room it'll fit rather than the spot that gives best performance.

I'm leaning towards the Servo15 right now and have been scouring the classifieds on the net.

Yes, you have a nice big room there Mark, so i would go for the biggest possible sub you can get.
At £500 the Servo 15 seems a bleedin' good proposition considering the sort of subs you can get for that dosh in our beloved high street chains.

I'd really like to hear the Velo CHT-15, because if it's capable of producing a scaled down performance of the HGS-18 then it would be well worth owning one...

Bob007, Jase, JSW, THX1138 will be glad to tell you how good it is
Steve.Ex, Smurfin, Orbital etc...will be glad to tell you how good the Servo 15 is....

These big driver subs make a massive impact on music & movies.
Plus, they just look so damn menacing & 'bloke-ish'

Hi Mark

As you´ll know I´ve got the CHT 15 and have been really impressed by it. Plenty of punch with nice, clean bass, also extends lower than the figures quoted by Velodyne.

BUT! In your case, you have a VERY large room so if you´re looking at high output levels then it´s more than likely you´ll need two. Or save your cash and go for an HGS 15/18 further down the road.

By all accounts I don't think you could go wrong with either of them:D

My assumption is that I would need 2 (at least). 2 Servo 15's = £998. That's less than half an HGS18. However, if I had the available fund I know which way I would go.

Also 2 CHT15's would be around half the price of an HGS18. I know the published figures are largely irrelevant for them so it may well be down to a little gamble.

I feel my best bet is to look around for a secondhand Servo15 or 2 from people taking the HGS upgrade.

I may be of a little help....

My advice is to give the Velo a little more consideration... I'll tell you why...

I have a servo15 and it is indeed a monster, and it does special things indeed...but.... a friend of mine has a velodyne (don't know which model, has an active 12" driver and a passive 15" driver). It's about 2/3 the size of mine but is is bloody awesome. Puts my servo to shame. I have only heard it with music, and his room acoustics are competely different. All I can say is that for the size, it is mighty impressive.

Mark, out of curiosity, what are the dimensions of your room?

My living room is 12' x 22'....and a single Servo 15 pressure loads the room quite nicely

Smurfin

Marks room is a rather small 42ft x 20ft! :D

Ahh:eek:

Buy 2 then mate:D

Marks room is a rather small 42ft x 20ft!
Buy 2 then mate
It's also over 17ft High to the highest point and over 12,000cubic/ft.

Whichever Sub I choose I'll need more than one.

Sounds interesting... I was hoping for an "I had a Servo 15 and now I've got a CHT15" type post. Could you find out which model your friend has?

Cheers,

Mark.

Hi Mark

Have you considered the DIY route? I have a DIY IB (infinite baffle) sub mounted in my cinema ceiling and in terms of value for money and sound quality the Servo 15 can't touch it.

If you have the space give it a go you will not be dissappointed. More info available here. http://home.tampabay.rr.com/kraushome/IB.html

I look at the links you posted, they look very interesting. However, in my room there is a vaulted ceiling therefore no roof void. I suspect that under the floor would be a little damp, no to mention the fact it's packed with insulation material and I need to run a mass of cable through there.

I don't think it would work for me though I like the idea in priciple.

Mark.

I too was considering you dilemma a while back and whilst already owning 2 servo's i opted for an additional 2 which at £1800 was still less than a single hgs18 and i feel far better at driving a large room than ANY single unit.
I suspect there would be very little real world performance differences between a single servo or hgs15 unit.

I have listened to an awful lot of subs and am COMPLETELELY satisfied with my decision.

Regards

Steve.

Well in that case a single Pro50 should be top of the list.

Be careful though, the performance stated for this sub may be too much for your size of room. :D

I'd go for 4xCHT-10's :)

I think there is little "real world difference" between the servo powered CHT-15 and Paradigm servo 15.

However, I think you are being somewhat optimistic if you believe there is little difference between the paradigm and Velodynes HGS units. At more than 3 times the power (1250 watts), the Velodyne HGS 15/18 are on another level altogether. Thats a fact.

I just can't agree with this Eric. It also differs from independent journalist commenting on this subject who own both HGS and Servo15 units.

I wrote something on this earlier but lost it due to a computer fault. I will write some more later.

Mark,
Have you considered SVS subwoofers, they have a big big following in the States and a few people here also have them. Lots of info at svsubwoofers.com and on avsforum.com. They are also considered to be first rate for customer service.
Philmate.

I thought the CHT 15 only went to 22hz? I know Velo are pessimistic with their quoting of figures, but surely not THAT far out?

I did have a brief look at the site some time ago. I'll have another look at the SVS Site. Any suggestions which model may suit? I still like the idea of (at least) 2 subs.

Cheers,

Mark.

The REL Quake with its shoebox size 11 litre enclosure, tiny driver, and puny amp quote 23hz. The moral of this story? Many on paper figures (particularly speakers/subwoofers), mean jack sh*t.

I was in the same dilema as you not long ago. Having been through the Richer Sounds merry go round loads of times, I ended up with the Velodyne.
After being messed around with for some two months, I was unlucky enough to eventually recieve my Paradigm some six weeks ago. Within days, I could smell burning and it wasn't my girlfriends cooking. It was the Paradigm which I switched off instantly. Having called Richer countless times and got nowhere, I eventually returned the bloody thing to the shop and demanded my money back. The service I recieved was appaling and I will never step into another Richers store again.

I was lucky enough to meet Eric through a mutual friend and took an instant liking to the guy. Top man. I recieved my Velodyne on the day he said it would arrive. Set it up as per his instructions. And my god. What a corker. The CHT 15 is the biggest and best bargain I've bought for my room. It does what it says on the tin. That is, fantastic, clean lowww power and blends in brilliantly with my S85s
