I've just seen the latest deal with currys and was wondering whether the CCA supports Apple Music yet??

Just ordered 2 online, cracking price.

While I'm sure I'll still use my various squeezebox devices myself I'm looking forward to having a play and it'll be brilliant for friends and family and streaming stuff I haven't added to my NAS yet.

I think PLEX should be able to help you out.
Apple and google are not the best of friends ;o)

Plex is pretty good with these, but I do have a couple of problems.

My library itself is on my iMac and when I try to stream straight from that, it can't usually find the Chromecast Audios. It can sometimes find them so it is not a connection problem.

Streaming from the iMac via iPhone or iPad to one or all of the Chromecast Audios works first time every time and the only issue I have here is that Plex seems to 'forget' it is casting after a while. The music plays on, but when I go into the Plex app to stop or change it, it doesn't register that it is actually playing anything.

I can get around this by starting another cast to the same group and then immediately stopping it, but not quite as slick as I'd like yet.

The devices themselves are amazing though. I had real problems with Sonos because they only ran on 2.4ghz and these are great in comparison. I can't believe they are £14 now, I thought they were already excellent value at £30.

Thanks for the feedback on plex, I have only just been reading about it. So it is an answer for apple products?
These work really well with Samsung galaxy tab, like they were made for it. I can even cast directly to my sonos from google play, so no need to use sonos app. On my old laptop I get drop outs whenever processor maxes out.
I still think play:1's are fantastic for kitchen and bedrooms tho, only needing a power lead and music at the press of top button.

Yes, I think Plex is a good solution for Chromecast Audio and Apple devices, notwithstanding those couple of issues.

I don't think it will ever be such a smooth experience as you will get using them with Android products because neither Apple or Google want it to be.

I am still a bit of a Sonos fan myself despite my own personal experiences. It is a great system and some of the hardware is lovely. Whilst the Chromecast Audio tends to make the Sonos Connect at £250 look a bit of a ridiculous product, a lot of the speakers with casting built-in are similarly priced to their Sonos equivalents and that is where the real demand in the market seems to be.

I got a CA from currys, thing is though, in order to use it I need to either use a long (1m ish) usb power cable or a similar length audio cable. What would be the better choice ?

For 1m, it shouldn't make any difference to either so use what is easier for you.

Got mine two days ago and am impressed with its ease of use via my Samsung S5, however my iPad two connectivity is proving to be a challenge.

Do you guys plug this thing out when you're not using it? I suppose there is no way of simply turning it off and I've noticed that it stays quite warm even when not being used..

I have a Chromecast Audio and the two versions of the Chromecasts which are permanently plugged into TVs. I leave them connected all the time and I suspect they use very little power. The TV Chromecasts remain more active as they display a sequence of high quality slides on the TV screen when not being used. You cannot switch this off as far as I know.

Why don't you power the TV ones from the TV's usb port so they turn off when the tv is off?

I am interested in buying one of these to stream music to a Vita/Ruark Audio R2 in my bedroom (it's one of the older models without streaming capabilities). I have got Sonos kit elsewhere in my house but don't want to spend £280 on a Sonos Connect for the bedroom.

Before I pull the trigger on the Chromecast Audio, however, I am trying to find out if it will stream music from my NAS, which is connected to my wireless router, without needing my laptop to be powered up. My Sonos systems do this without any issues but I can't seem to find a definitive answer as to whether the Chromecast will (just that it will play music from a phone/tablet/laptop or via internet streaming services).

Does anyone stream music directly from a NAS?

I don't personally, but I do use Plex to stream from my Mac. I think that Plex will stream from a NAS directly, so I can't see any reason why this would not work for you.

You can stream from a NAS without having a computer running. You'd need to control your music from an app like BubbleUPnP or something like that.

+1 for BubbleUPNP. TBH I've not really used it in anger as I tend to default to using Google music. You get free space for up to 50K tracks so you may find you don't even need your NAS.

I do also have several squeezebox devices, that can play the same library but using the original source FLACS but TBH I couldn't sa it sounds any better than play music via the CCA which does used compressed format.

It may be because both the SB and CCA use a digital signal to my amp.

Thanks for the replies. I don't have an Android device so would need to use an iPhone as the controller. Does the Chromecast app not control what you stream (in a similar way to the Sonos one)?

I can only speak for Android but the CC app deals with setting them up and creating groups for synced playback. The actual casting is handled within each individual app. You can also choose system audio in the CC app and then playback audio from any app.

It's a little different when using BubbleUPNP as the phone I believe still handles more of playback duties but in general when streaming online you don't stream to your phone and then to the CCA, the phone controls the CCA which streams directly from the source. Once you set a playlist or album going you could turn your phone off and playback would continue to the end.

I'm not convinced the CCA is as good on iOS, unsurprising I guess, but I've not got an iDevice so could be mistaken in my opinion.

Only difference is you can’t cast system audio natively on iOS but otherwise as you describe - use the relevant app (Plex) as the remote for controlling playback. Just hit the cast icon and select the target CCA or group.

It's a major advantages over a Sonos set up as you’re using the full first party app with all its features rather than something cobbled together based on APIs within the Sonos SDK.

The only downside in a way is that all of a sudden the other streaming kit you have suddenly looks overcomplicated and poor VFM. I had to steal the optical cable from the SBT I have in the lounge, I've since bought a replacement but not plugged it in yet, the CCA is that good IMO.

I agree. I only moved from Sonos to CCA because I needed something that ran on 5ghz Wifi, but now I have got them set up, I can't see myself wanting to go back for any reason. I missed the all-in-one feel of the Sonos app to start with, but got used to not having it very quickly.

I can now use my own amps/speakers with a £30 device rather than a £280 one, and have generally improved sound quality in the zones where I had the 'Play' devices as well, although the cost saving is not so great there.

The main benefit for me has been the near 100% stability, but I realise that most people didn't have that with their other streaming systems anyway.
