Christmas work "do's"

Surprised how many parties involve partners.
Something we've never done.
Aside from the massive increase in cost, it would undoubtedly curtail the behaviour of the employees.
We don't them thenm 'reined in', we want to them to let go.

Ours is at the National Railway Museum in York, a dinner and dance in the main hall with tables among all the old engines...should be good.
How defendable is it? :)

Rather not go. Not interesting people and why would I want to spend more time with them lol. Also if do/say something can be used against you (as a mate's mate found out)

Wow you guys are lucky, despite working for a huge multi billion pound company who we work our backsides off for we have no fun. They do give us a lunch, but on a Tuesday or Wednesday, miles away from anywhere so we all have to drive.

Last year they held a two hour meeting on cost cutting measures in the morning beforehand.

Tight gits.

:thumbsdow

Guessing I'm quite lucky that the company I work for (new job, so this is my second week into the job) seem pretty fair so far. And the people I work with are either my age or a tad older. Far, far better than the NHS work I've done in the past.

A mate of mine works for the NHS.
I don't believe they should get a christmas party on the Tax payer.
The department he works for is a friggin' holiday camp as it is.

Don't care but one thing I do know is that the Zombie who got my brain that night would be very unsteady on their feet and unable to walk properly, mumbling unintelligible noises, generally being a nuisance...probably even a be sex pest.

Now that sounds great !

Completely different. I have trouble in trying to find a venue for our team, but that sounds like a nice change. I wish there was somewhere in our vicinity that was similar ! :(

I was a contracter doing IT across the Sussex county. We got treated like crap. No training given what-so-ever, so everything I learn't was through either a work mate or 'break it to fix it' way of working.

Our Christmas 'do' was a few pints down the pub after work. That was it.

I disagree, a good Christmas bash should be everyone's right private or public sector.

At least it gives the impression that the bigwigs even slightly want to give back to the troops. It's the human cost dammit:)

The only thing I think lets it down is that it is only a disco...it would have been better with a Big Band group there playing and singing Christmas songs...with a disco too of course although I'd love to see Wham's Last Christmas done Glenn Miller style!

That's quite sad when you think about it Smudger ? We're just a small outfit, and our Xmas do requires only about 20 invites, but even so, they can have whatever they want to drink - the more the merrier lol !

I can sort of understand that larger companies can't afford to do the same due to that larger workforce, but even so, in my eyes, it's a way of saying thank you for all the hard work that everyone has done throughout the year.

Some companies are just downright tight !

We had one, 1 pint was free but had to listen to speech and about work too...yawn. Went once and that was it.

It was looking back. And that was just 5/6 of us (a very small team. One, who sadly, is no longer with us). I think all the teams had their own do's. Would have been best to have all the teams together really, but it didn't work out like that.

In our line of work, the other businesses seem to charge the workforce's partners to attend the do, whereas we don't.

Has anyone else come across this, where your other half has to pay to attend the Xmas dinner ? I personally think it's bang out of order !

If I recall a fight broke out between the boss and mates mate, both hammered and both egging each other one. Anyway boss used that to sack him later on. Just made another excuse why he was being laid off. Reason why I don't socialise with work colleagues, say the wrong thing and used against you.

A friend of mine had his do at Madame Tussauds in London. His work hired the entire place out for the evening. Was a good night, I hear

HATE friggin works Christmas parties.

The part I hate (When he had something) was a manager/boss who had been a bastard to you for the past 364 days suddenly thinks he can be your best friend because it's Christmas, and you are eating a mince pie and drinking a beer next to each other.

And of course he/she will turn back into a bastard on the 1st day back after the break.

SWMBO's old company did that for their year-end party a couple of years ago. It was a good laugh. When you got there you did the train ride, then you went into the party which was set out like a celeb-do - there were 'paparazzi' on the door taking your photos as you walked up the red carpet, then inside there were loads of 'celebs' set out as if they are at a drinks party. It's the closest I will get to having a threesome with SWMBO and Sarah Michelle Gellar anyway :)

The next year they took the whole firm to Dubai

Then the next year the recession hit and they went to a motel in Surrey with Steve Davis as the guest speaker :)

Never mind paying for the other half, we have to pay for our own christmas party every year!

I work for one of the biggest transport company's in the world/country.
