i am setting a new 5.1 system in the living room and have chosen the following; (after much reading of reviews)

plasma pioneer pdp-434hde with table top stand
    cable hdmi cable
    dvd pioneer dv-868avi-s
    amp pioneer vsx-ax5i-s
    speakers ms908 pair (fronts)
    ms903 pair (rears)
    ms907 sub
    ms905 center

can anyone suggest a better speaker set for the £1000 that ms's are going to cost?

i am particuarly concerned about getting kit that suits music and movies with a bias to movies. any help would be appreciated.

Try and grab a demo of the Castle Compact system which comes in at about £1,000

Keep those options but switch for a more musical DVD and AvReceiver from Marantz (developed in conjunction with MS to sound great).

i wouldn't. i would keep with your original Pioneer suggestion. The Marantz tend to sound quite flat, dull and insirpiring with movies, i find. Also, you'd get true digital DVD-A/SACD/HDMI connections through all the Pioneer stuff (iirc). Sounds like the makings of an absolutely stonking system providing you choose mains/interconnect/speaker wires carefully too. Maybe change the sub to the MJ Acoustics Pro50 @ £300 or £350 though. The ms907w suffers from port chuffing, i find.

The AX5 should work nicely with those speakers but I second rozzar's comments (for slightly different reasons ;)) about the 907- it simply won't do very much more than the 908's will. In addition to the MJ, you might want to look at the 309/909 that we do. If you need something a little smaller, the MS Genie system is now only a few weeks away and I have very high hopes for it.

If it's for movies then keep the Pioneers...
