After suffering from very bad reflux and excessive stomach acid for a number of years, I found myself with the misfortune of not having a new doctor who could issue me with a prescription to combat the effects of the acid which is awful. I even saw a stomach specialist a few weeks ago and ended up doing a berium swallow to try and get to the root cause of the problem. (results not back)

Anyway, after reading up on the effects of western medicine, which could worsen depression from time to time, I decided to go and see a Chinese Doctor who uses alternative medicine and herbal remedies.

Anyway, when there, she took at look at my tongue and prodded my stomach and told me I was having terrible gastric problems and that my pulse was indicative of someone suffering from stress. She recommended a two-week course of stuff that I have to boil twice daily, filter and then drink. It cost me £80.00. Now, one week into the course my stomach is feeling massively better, the reflux has gone, I can now sleep without having to sit up and my tongue looks like its proper colour again.

Never one to place my faith in false dogma, I have to say that this truly is working and that as I have another week to go, it can only get better and better. Oh, and frankly the drink tastes like mud but it is helping me a great deal!

Has anyone else used alternative medicine or therapy and found it successful...seems like it is where its at! Yippeee

    Pete.

glad its working for you...for now.

However, forgive me as someone who works for one of the 'dreaded Western Pharmaceutical companies'....but please be just as careful with alternative therapies.

There are tens of thousands of deaths per year due to such treatments, of course they are not properly recorded or controlled.

Yes modern medicine can cause problems, however, there is at least a lengthy process of health and safety procedures - take care with Chinese medicine.

Not sure about the alternative bit but I've always been a big fan of opium.

I believe there's a place for both to exist side by side.

On a day to day basis, homoeopathy did far more for my eczema than the whole range of steriod creams and funny little pills that the doctor prescribed - it eased the symptoms and pretty much cured me of my intolerance to dairy products.

However, whenever my skin did really flare up (stress usually did the trick!) then only a course of antibiotics would sort it out.

    Hello Captain,

    Have a look here: http://curezone.com/dis/1.asp?C0=21

Addictive reading that site and the forums :)

I had bad Acid problems for years, sorted out just by eating more healthy food and following lots of simple and common sense advice on various healthy websites.

    Good luck,

    Mark.

How does that figure compare to deaths due to conventional meds?

Jeff, I don't have a figure for you, but every death linked to a particular medicine will be logged.
My point is that alternative therapies are not monitored and that there are many dangers in particular where they are not prepared with proper care. The presumption that 'natural' remedies are safe is a dangerous fallacy.

I for one would rather take a treatment tested for 5-10 years, subject to rigourous monitoring, rather than a potion of mixed herbs and junk , mixed in someones garage.

I use aromatherapy oils sometimes and they seem to work for me. But you have to be aware of contra indication such as some should not be used if you suffer form certain conditions, e.g. some should not be used if you suffer from low blood pressure, or others high blood pressure etc.

Absolutely. I wouldn't come near any pharmaceutical crap. The drugs produced by pharmaceutical companies are nothing but harmful and a way of making money. Drugs have so many side effects that you have to take pills just to counter the side effects. Nasty, nasty.

Do you feel a cold is coming? Immediately stop eating and drink a glass of water every half hour for the rest of the day. Drink 1,000 mg of vitamin C every hour for the rest of the day. It must not be ascorbic acid (which is fake, sythetic "vitamin" C). The cold will be gone before you know it.

Want to clean your liver? Fast until 2pm. Mix 4 tablespoons of Epson salts in 750 mL water. That is 4 servings of 185 mL each. At 6pm, drink one serving. At 8pm, drink another serving. At 10pm, mix 1/2 cup of olive oil with 1/2 cup of freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice. Drink it within 5 minutes, and you must stand upright. You *must* lie down immediately, because your liver will immediately react. Sleep on your left side. (This is to open the valves in your liver and to let gravity help flush out all the crap in your liver.) Next morning, take the third serving, and 2 hours later, the last one. When you go to the washroom, (and you will!!) observe what your body secreted. Yuck. You'll feel a whole lot better tho.

There are thousands of other things you can do. Pharmaceutical companies, of course, will never tell you about them because it can't make them money. Never buy anything from them, or (witch) doctors.

When you go down the alternative path, be sure to follow your common sense. I wouldn't trust "John Doe's Cure-It-All Mix." However, if your common sense tells you this doesn't seem dangerous, go for it.

Never, never take pharmaceutical products. They are poisonous and only treat a symptom. You want to cure the cause, not treat a symptom.

A standard and common practice in Chinese herbalism is substitution. This is the process of substituting another herb which is presumed to have the same or similar physiological effect. Unfortunately, the identification of the substituted herb is not made
clear. In effect, any particular ingredient on a label or in a prescription may actually not be found in the prescription or patent
formula, but instead, another unidentified herb may be substituted for it.

" The investigation that initiated the toxic potential of AA in humans was a 1993 series of kidney failure cases at a Belgian weight-loss clinic.5 In 1990 this clinic began prescribing a reformulated, encapsulated Chinese herbal preparation intended to contain, in part, Stephania tetrandra (for its purported diuretic effects; 100-200mg/day total dose) accompanied by a regimen of other agents. After an exceptionally high incidence of varying degrees of kidney failure was noted among nine women, phytochemical evaluation of the Chinese herbal product appeared to confirm the absence of S. tetrandra. The authors noted the similarity in the species name of Aristolochia fangchi with the Chinese name for S. tetrandra, fang ji. Follow-up investigations by the same research team identified another 41 women, 18 of whom required kidney transplants. "

A bit like Thalidomide, or Viagra (which makes you blind apparently), or Vioxx, Bextra etc.

I do believe medicine are useful and all but I try and avoid taking them for minor pains.

Regarding alternative therapy, I guess it depends on what you're going for and who's advising you. If you've got cancer and a weirdo tells you he can cure you by looking at your picture and concentrating, run away.
However more "primitive" (not said in a bad way) civilisations still use plants and herbs to cure small problems, so why not.

... yeah and we would have gotten away with it ...it if hadn't been for you pesky kids !!

some typical posts here which underline my point - they emphasise side effects of pharma medicines whilst advocating trying some untested Yak's dung tea

Most medicines have side effects, a factof any effective drug - the trick is to know about and publish these side effects thereby managing them. Most Herbal medicines have low side effects because they actually have little or no active ingredient.

Of course there are problems ie Thalidomide, hey nothings perfect and this drug was tested to the limits of the then known criteria......as it is this experience helped improve the success and safety of subsequent treatments. Remember at least this was detected, with alternative treatments there are no Safety commitees looking out for you.

As for Viagra making you blind - totally unproven, these were just reports, although it may be that it is an in-built protection system if they drug is detecting you are about to s**g a minger ! ;)

many of those herbs and plants are exactly what are used to synethesise modern pharmecuticles ... however, unlike modern medicine, alot of 'alternative practices' make diagnosis and perscriptions / cures without the advantage of CAT scans , xrays, biopsies etc ...

it is fair enough to treat a basic head ache, a sceptic cut nausea with plants and fungi - I am well aware of specific ones that are suitable for those purposes, the problem is that some people assume that if one thing works for a particular practice then its all 'legitamet'.

Diabetes can be cured, but you're not going to like the answer. In fact, you'll just ridicule me without actually trying it.

You need to read this book:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...002-1475247-0912006?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

You will be amazed at what it reveals.

That said... to cure diabetes.. Dr. Fuhrman describes the process in his book Eat to Live (http://www.drfuhrman.com/). This book cites the China Study occasionally, and the conclusions and advice is the same. Here is the link. http://www.drfuhrman.com/disease/Diabetes.aspx I know, I know, you don't believe it. If you have diabetes though, don't you think it is worth trying? Even if there is only a 1% chance of it working?

My parents have been living with the Fuhrman diet (basically a raw vegetarian diet) for many years now. They're both in their mid 50s, almost 60. Neither of them have any health problems whatsoever. Neither takes any pharmaceutical products. Compare that to their brothers and sisters, all of whom are taking some form of pill for some chronic illness (diabetes runs in the family apparently; some also have osteoporosis, high blood pressure, arteosclerosis, etc., all the nasty things Americans suffer from). The only difference is DIET!

I've heard about that diet. It's the one that takes all the fun, variety and enjoyment out of mealtimes.

I suspect your parents must be just about ready to die, but those damn vegetables just won't let that happen! :D ;)

Hmm, I don't have my books with me now, but a well known doctor has a cancer treatment hospital in Mexico. What he does is illegal in the United States. See, over here, only "doctors" are allowed to treat cancer patients, even if the patient consents to being treated by someone else. It is not legal for me, for example, to treat someone that has cancer. (The pharmaceutical companies pushed this legislation through; they also write the curriculum at med school. "Doctors" here are just drug dispensers, brainwashed by the pharmaceutical companies. But whatever.) As a result, he moved to Mexico. What is he doing that makes it so illegal in the United States?

He doesn't use pharmaceutical "treatments" (poisons) to treat cancer patients. Cancer can quite easily be treated successfully with a change in diet. I don't remember everything he does (it is in his book), but it does involve a raw vegetarian diet. Lots of carrot juice (1 gallon a day), for sure, since it is hard to find something more cleansing in the body than carrot juice. Sunlight without sunscreen (which blocks vitamin D production). Vitamin C supplements (20 grams or more, per day).

The doctor is actually quite successful. His clinic is not the only one. They are jumping up all over the Caribbean. Unfortunately, this form of treatment is not legal in the United States (unless you do it to yourself).

I'm a vegan too. Most people's complaint about this diet is that it seems boring. After 3 months on it, most people change their minds. In fact, after 3 months, you'll find meat disgusting.

It is quite wonderful to live without any illness. For those that just want to ridicule it, why? Does it sound too unbelievable? Perhaps. But you wouldn't know until you've tried it, eh?

I do recommend buying Eat to Live, and the China Study. Read it, apply it for 3 months, and see the results. If you're not happy, you can always burn the books and go back to whatever you were doing. But just imagine that it IS worth it... Wouldn't you be happy you tried? This goes 10x for those that suffer from a chronic illness such as diabetes.

My girlfriend of five years is a vegan and a talented cook- a couple of nights a week we'll eat the same stuff. Nonetheless she would never deny that veganism has limitations in a variety sense because if you really push the envelope of vegan cuisene, you'll will normally run into cost implications. Cep mushrooms are fantastic but unless you are fortunate enough for them to grow locally, you will pay handsomely for them. Same with many other foodstuffs.

I wouldn't be suprised that none of the Mexico based doctor's patients died of leukemia. I would have thought that an overdose of Vitamin C and/or a dose of Skin Cancer would have finished them off before the leukemia ever became a problem.

    :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: priceless.

One study I read recently claimed that out of 100 cancer patients, some 44% claimed to have taken some sort of alternative treatments......whilst only 4% of the total had stopped taking the prescribed Pharmaceutical medicines. Any remissions no doubt were attributed to the acupuncture and Yak's dung !

Even the claims regarding large doses of Vit C are highly dubious, still happy your parents are fit and healthy, its just that if they do suffer from any number of conditions then it is good to know that modern medicine exists....doesn't it ?

Ethics is correct in pointing out that many Pharma products are derived from natural sources, its just that they are then rigourously tested to the best that current knowledge allows. The difference with the local Chinese medicine man is that few or any tests are made to determine if he is killing or curing.

Most people who are anti - Pharma are the biggest hypccrites - few refuse the antibiotics or serious medicines when they need them.

That will NOT cure diabetes. Similar claims have been made that the Atkins diet is one way to manage diabetes. And indeed for diabetes type 2, Atkins IS a viable way forward - although by no means suited to everyone.

But they won't cure the diabetes, they'll simply prevent the conditions arising where it may cause harm. i.e. you don't eat foods that are likely to elevate your blood sugar. This is very different to a cure.

But diabetes type 1 sufferers will still need insulin injections. (At least until the 'evil' pharmaceutical companies and medical researchers complete their work on reactivating insulin-producing pancreas cells).

I'm a type 2 diabetic by the way. The medication I'm on is Metformin. Interestingly, the compound was originally derived from some plants.

So I suppose your view that all pharmaceutical drugs being 'evil' won't apply to those that are derived from natural remedies?

And I note you didn't address the point on how to address an underactive thyroid herbally. My wife will be particularly interested in your answer to that one, given that following surgery when she was younger she effectively has no thyroid gland.

my mum has acupuncture for her (sometimes crippling) arthritis - for her it works far better than anything else she's tried. She has quite an open mided GP who is pretty clued up on alternative parctices and so has been lucky enough to ge it paid for by the NHS.

Rahl although I believe in getting the right amounts of vitamins each day the doses you are suggesting would be harmful if taking them over a long period of time.

Carrots contain Vit A which can easily be overdosed on, vit C they recommend not to take over 250mg if taken on a regular basis.
Sunlight without block gives you skin cancer.

Just because you go outside doesn't mean you will get skin cancer. Don't be silly. And that is hardly an overdose of vitamin C. Not if you're sick. For you, it'd be a waste. You just urinate excess vitamin C out. You won't die of an "excess."
