    Hooray!

This classic is coming to us in high definition on the 3rd of April this year.

This release date is currently only for the US, but being a Paramount catalogue title I suspect it'll be region free anyway.

EDIT - Now announced in the UK too, see Post #27 (below).

Thank god for that! Chinatown is one of my top 5 films - always has been since I first saw it many years ago. The current DVD looks pretty good from what I remember so Im hoping the blu will blow us away - its a very bright film for the most part so it should do.

And the more extras the better! This is a film which will make me go for a more expensive steelbook/digibook option if there is one too.

Rosemarys Baby would be nice too Paramount! :lease:

    Calm youself, Mr Lime! :smashin:

Oh-oh, too late, here are the specs:

    That's amazing.

Original soundtrack in lossless audio? No problem.

Commentary by the writer of the original, legendary screenplay and a modern great director? You got it.

Input on the peeerless cinematography by peerless cinamatographer? That'll be fine, thank you.

The only thing 'missing', and I'm being picky here, quite a few years ago the BBC did a documentary on the screenplay for the film, and why it is lauded as one of the greatest ever. I'd love to see either that again, or something similar. Having said that, the material may be covered in the other extras.

Had another 'romance explosion' yet, Mr Lime?

Its in a slipcase too for all the slipcase freaks out there! ;)

Why theres no UK announcement I dont know but I think this is going to have to be an import buy after release - as long as its region-free.

Jack Nicholson's best? I think so. Its between that and The Shining for me. Although hes been brilliant in other films too like The Passenger and One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest etc etc of course.

Funny I was playing the CD soundtrack the other week and thought Jerry Goldsmiths love theme is absolutely gorgeous although nominated for an Oscar did not win that year:(

I also think this is Nicholson's best performance, maybe along with Five Easy Pieces.

The Postman Always Rings Twice is alright, but it can't touch this. Jessica Lange gave the stand out performance in that film. It rescued her career after the critical disaster that was King Kong nearly killed it off (though I actually thought her performance was fine in it).

I think Faye Dunaway also gave her best performance in Chinatown, she was just perfectly cast, even though she and Polanski hated each other. And to think that the role was written with Ali McGraw in mind, possibly the most bland and least talented leading actress of the decade.

    Yes, maybe.

Leave aside the film itself (which I like), Nicholson's character is an extremely complex series of contradictions. Getting us to love such a bigot must have been one of the hardest jobs an actor could be given.

Not sure I ever loved Jake Gittes, but one ends up identifying with him because the story is told from his POV. He is no hero, but at least he is not nearly as corrupt as some of the other characters, including what is one of the most evil and depraved villains in film history. Nicholson is great at playing a none too bright man who realises too late that he has gotten in far, far over his head. Unlike with some of his later performances he is understated and subtle here and every though registers.

I had just Sky plussed Chinatown, but will now wait for the Blu.

Check out Five Easy Pieces - a stunning performance and a terrific movie, from the time when they used to make movies for grown ups. Up there with Chinatown as my favourite Nicholson performance. Been enjoying it again recently after buying the America Lost and Found Criterion Blu Ray box set which for me was probably the release of 2011.

And yes, an excellent soundtrack too - one of Goldsmith's finest.

    Just a quick heads up.

This is now up at Amazon UK for a release on this side of the pond - current price is £13.99.

No word on whether they'll have the same extras, but there's deinitely a delay of over a month, with this not arriving until the 28th of May.

    Chinatown [Blu-ray]: Amazon.co.uk

It might be as cheap to order the US one. No customs or VAT at that price, and even with postage I suspect it'll be less than £15 to import. Hardly worth the wait.

It's easy to forget Nicholson was also in Warren Beatty's Reds - it's shown so rarely - and how good he is, but even there he was well on the way to becoming "Jack Nicholson" rather than the character actor he is in Chinatown and Five Easy Pieces. I also get the impression Beatty was a little jealous of how good Jack was with Diane Keaton and edited his scenes accordingly :)

True, he was very good in Reds and much more memorable than Beatty. Reds is currently on rotation on one of the Sky movie channels. I've been considering recording it, it's just rather long and I'm not sure I like the film enough to devote another 3+ hours to it.

I had a quick look in my cart for amazon US and noticed it had dropped from $24.99 to $18.99 - maybe the UK price will drop too before release date? Presumably the discs will be the same?
