Thanks for bringing this release to our attention. Truly one of my favourite films, I loved it when I first saw it and I'm reminded why I like it so much with every watch.

Sticking with the old bluray for now - it always was a good looking bluray so not feeling the need to upgrade here.

Great movie, but what is it with Arrow going to the expense of a new 4K scan, only to then release it on a 1080p blu-ray. Very, very bizarre. They did the same with The Thing.

      Get with the times Arrow.

Might be worth editing the dates as the review switches between 2006 and 2008 as the cinema release date (the former being correct).

Otherwise a good review of a great, but difficult to watch, film.

Love this film, but was hoping for a longer directors cut, as it always felt too short to me! I too, have the original blu ray and there isn't enough here to make me double dip unfortunately

I'm not sure how much benefit this film would gain from a 4k release. Other than exacerbating the level of grain.

Wondering if this is due to the non-enforcement of Region coding on 4K UHD

@Casimir Harlow Mr Harlow, I do realise that you may choose not to respond, but I have three observations.

One, you describe how there has been an improvement in the video quality over the previous Blu-ray release. However, it is not clear in the audio review section whether this new disc carries the same DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track as the previous Universal 2009 Blu-ray?

Two, and this is a complaint that I have about many, if not most, reviews of new versions of existing discs, on this forum and also on Home Cinema Choice print magazine. Normally this applies to reviews of 4K discs, but it's also valid here - you do not say whether (and I know that it would be only your opinion, but you are a respected reviewer and so your opinion would be welcomed by lay people like me!) it is worth getting the new disc, if one already has the existing disc? I do have an earlier version already, this one:
      Children of Men.jpg
Three, in your second paragraph you mention the storyline's similarity to Orwell's 1984. What a pity therefore that you did not mention whose idea this storyline actually was, namely (as it says on the back of my existing Blu-ray cover) that this film is based on the book by the late Dame Phyllis D. James, see here Wikipedia.

But they release blu-rays in the US, so what would stop them releasing 4k titles in both territories? Criterion too.

I almost jumped when I thought it was a sneaky 4K release, when that arrives it will be a day one for me.
This is my only steelbook, had to purchase when I saw the artwork.

Children of Men is my favourite Cuaron film and in my all time top 5 (will The forthcoming Roma change my mind...).
It’s a tremendous piece of work, the use of intelligent cgi and imaginative camera work from Lubezki never mind terrific performances from all cast members.
Owen owns it, couldn’t think of anyone who could provide a better performance and the ending..heartbreaking...
The use of light/music all to be applauded.

Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for the 4K and hopefully Atmos transfer.

Some really red blood splatter on the camera lens, always wondered if that bit was meant to be kept in...
Agree with this, we have some lush forest scenes among the greyed out city scenes.

I can't discern any significant differences between the audio tracks, which would suggest that they are the same. And the only people who are really going to benefit from this release are those who don't already own Children of Men on Blu-ray. Completists will want the new extras and those who want the best video will want to upgrade, but it's not a night and day difference in any way, so I can completely understand why those who are already happy with the BD they own aren't reaching into their pockets on day 1.

Surprisingly good film... And the single camera action scene was astonishing! The only downside for me was the premise that the human race would go sterile over that short a period of time. Did they give a reason for it at all that I've forgotten?

Is this Region B locked, or would anyone know if this will play in a Region A player?

It's not about the 'why' it's about what would society be like if it were to become true.

Infact, a study last year found that western male fertility has dropped 40% in the past 40 years, so who knows, maybe one day it will happen.

The infertility crisis is beyond doubt. Now scientists must find the cause

Yeah, you're right... I guess I would have preferred the setup to have been over a hundred years or something - it would have felt more realistic for me. You are spot on, the film is about the experience not the reason, I am just one of those sci fi fans who likes plausibility.

SMH. An upgrade to 4K would not exacerbate grain at all, the grain would not magically become heavier but would be resolved better, as well as all detail gaining clarity and resolution.

Love this film. But as with 12 Monkeys and this being a "big studio" film...I'm happy to wait for a UHD release.

I'm amazed Arrow don't do them...they love daft, expensive niche releases!

@Casimir Harlow Hi, thank you for your review, but how do you know it's a 4K remaster? There was nothing about it in the official statement from Arrow. Not critisizing or anything, just curious. Because if it is indeed a 4K remaster, I'd be all over it... many thanks!

I don't know who SMH is, but grain heavy films don't fair well when given the HDR treatment. The grain is most definitely more apparent and distracting than the SDR counterpart. So in effect, the grain does become heavier. But that's semantics.
