There are many cheap subs around that will make loud noises but I would guess that £165 for the Velodyne CHT-8 being sold by AV-Sales is about the cheapest that will replay bass as opposed to distortion. Check it out in the subwoofer powerbuy forum

In the second hand arena I would recommend a Paradigm PDR8 which come up for sale occasionally here. I have no experience with these against makes like Velodyne, but against the budget brands I've heard they are far superior.

If the pdr8 is like the pdr10 then it is good for adding rumble to films but useless with music.

PDR8 is like a PDR10 but with a smaller driver. The PDR10 does just as DFour describes - not great with music but plenty of slam and power.

I've also heard a PDR12 and that's really quite awesome with movies for the price.

The Paradigm PSxxxx and PWxxxx are the ranges above and are very well reviewed and should definitely be better if you can track them down. :)

I've got an Original Rel Strata for sale if you're interested. I've always found it to be very good with movies and music.

You won't find much on the net about it, as its a few years old now.

It is in mint condition with instruction manual.

I'll let you know all the specs and dimensions when I get in from work.

How about £150.00 inclusive of delivery.

wow, having checked it out, i realise it's a classic. have you had it since 1994? how is it finished i.e. veneer, black etc. can't find a review of the original strata, but reviews of following versions are abundant and full of praise, so it can't be bad. I might be very interested, where are you based?, cheers.

thats ok mate, i'm gonna hold out for a while, it's not an urgent requirement so i'll save some extra funds and have a more serious look at my options at a later date.
once again thanks for your prompt replies and helpful advice.
