I'm building a HTPC and was wondering if I could use this in my build. Is it really as simple as connecting it via the IDE as you mentioned?

Will I need any special software to use this drive or will any HD DVD playback software do?

    Seems like an absolute bargain

you will need regular HD-DVD software as with any other drive (powerdvd is the player of choice i believe)

you will need to buy an ATAPI to IDE connector to plug it in

other than that it will work just fine in a PC, just need the drivers which are easily found i believe.

only problem is it needs a bit of chopping to fit in a standard 5.25" drive bay

Just resurrecting this thread with a question about the "ATAPI to IDE" connector. I was under the impression that ATAPI was just a transport protocol. Any chance you could post a link to an example of one of these connectors please as I'm having trouble locating one? Cheers.

Actually it's not just a standard ATAPI to IDE conector, the drive uses a custom pin configuration. Details are posted Here on avsforums, you will need to do some extensive and delicate modifications, just too much hassle IMHO, especially now that the Toshiba internal HD DVD drive is available.

    Good luck
