ok, I want to find a commercial site for mp3s, but not too commercial, if you get my drift. I've tried allofmp3, mediaclub and mp3search.ru, trouble is the range is a bit limited.

does anyone know a site with a really good range of stuff, but not charging like a bull in a china shop?

yes, I hear you say, this boy wants to have his cake and eat it too ...

    www.emusic.com

edited to add Emusic.com operates in the same way as itunes (they just specialise in indie labels) and are actually licensed by the copyright holders.

Curious, why is handing over your credit card details to music pirates/Russian mob behind Mp3search.ru and allofmp3 preferrable to downloading for free via usenet or P2P?

not much response to this - I thought there'd be more interest in this topic.

In response to Broughcut, I was after some Beefheart, and the only place I could find it (it's not on cd) was out east. I've got to admit there was a frisson of excitement when I gave them my credit card details, but so far it's worked out ok.

I've not tried ITunes, cheap eh?

    I wouldn't call iTunes cheap but there's a massive selection and it's 100% legal.

Can I use downloads from Itunes on my HD5?

I'm a little confused about the format they use.

They will be protected AAC files so I don't think iTunes will let you conver them to MP3 format.

Just had a look (after downloading 22 megs) at itunes - 99 american cents a track isn't cheap by my australian standards. The Russians sell 100meg for $1.50. And itunes don't have the Beefheart I was looking for before - Lick My Decals Off, Baby - admittedly a bit old and obscure, but I'm using it as a yardstick by which to judge the comprehensiveness of a collection

btw I'm here in outback australia watching on tv about bomb attacks on the underground and on buses in london - evil ****, I hope it doesn't too strongly affect the great English acceptance of all comers.

as much as i hate to admit it napster is pretty damn good, and they are giving away a 7 day free trial atm (a system very easy to exploit for free music ;) ) they also have a section of indie labels and have some pretty underground stuff, plus there are a load of signed bands of course.

I like soulseek, nice simple interface, easier to work with than Kazaa. Thanks for that.
