Thinking of buying a dirt cheap DVD player soon (to replace my Wharfedale 705S which is a bit dodgy).
    Choices:
    Panasonic DVDS27: £45
    Toshiba SD402: £50
    Aiwa HTDV90 MR: £40
    Yamaha DVDS520: £45
    Pioneer DV535: £50
    Cyberhome DVD402: £50

Or - to throw a spanner into, I could spend an extra £50-70 to get a DVD Recorder, which seems like the obvious choice!
    Yamada DVR8000: £120
    Relisys RDVR250RU: £100
    Tangent DVR500: £120

    Any help?

I would narrow your options to the Panasonic, Toshiba and Pioneer models out of that lot.

...all of which listed are fairly c*** DVD recorders (and players for that matter). To get a decent DVD recorder you need to spend around £200.
