I've looked around the big pc etailers but can't seem to find much aside from one designed for ATI cards (mine is NVIDIA).

Are there any cheap remotes that will work with zoom player?

My TV card has a remote but it seems it will only work with the bundled DVD software.

If the remote you're referring to is the ATI Remote Wonder the name's misleading, it is in no way tied to ATI cards and is a great, cheap wireless remote which I've used quite happily on an nVidia-based system. :)

However, it doesn't 'know' ZP out of the box, it uses plugins in the form of a DLL to interface to applications, I use TheaterTek and that comes with a Wonder plugin, there may be one for ZP, I wouldn't know. If you're a programmer then creating a DLL for ZP is pretty simple, if you're not then it isn't. :(
