Recorded Can't Pay We'll Take It Away & The Nightmare Neighbour Next Door on Channel 5HD last night. It was a shame Channel 5HD didn't launch the night before as i recorded Ian Brady 50 Years Behind Bars on SD Channel 5.

Thanks for this, i knew nothing about it. I even emailed Channel 5 about this a couple of months ago. They replied but no launch date given.

I bet in the North West most people watched the horrific hailstone electrical storm last night. I know we did. It was in better quality than UHD. :D

This wasn't very well publicised IMHO. I only discovered it this weekend as I was retuning my PVR which I've been putting off for a while (it loses recording schedules, so I have to redo my recordings too as well as manually sort the channels in my preferred order). Not that there is a great deal that I watch on 5, at least it'll look better when something does come on I want to watch, provided it isn't just upscaled.

I emailed C4 to ask about Film4 HD on Freeview but they didn't understand what I thought was a simple question and it all went a bit weird. It's one channel that would really benefit from HD.

I've had a look at Channel 5 and, actually, there have been a couple of programmes worth watching, which I found surprising. There was quite an interesting documentary about secret underground Britain, for example.

That's why Channel 5 made the HD version free to air. Many would not watch the content because the content was SD only. It's a purely economic decision, extra viewers versus income from encrypted income and the finish of the encryption contract with Sky. Personally I think it's a good that the 5 psb services now have a free HD version of the SD version.

Yes, since the move to HD I have now watched a couple of programmes that I probably wouldn't have sought out if the channel had remained solely as an SD option. I wonder how many other viewers consider channel selection and viewing like that, and whether the broadcasters appreciate that fact? I tend to not watch SD material much because of the obvious difference in quality between SD and HD, but on Freeview and Freesat I'm stuck with More4, which is about the only SD channel that I do watch regularly now. I know that I could get that in HD if I subscribed to Sky, but it's not worth it for me, just to get one extra HD channel. Having More4 and Film4 in HD would be a real bonus, but whether those channels will escape Sky's platform at any point is anyone's guess.
