Channel 4-5 merger

As simplistic view but CH4 have lived the dream and spent money they didn't have the budget to support on expensive imports (750k for Simpsons and another 750k for Desperate Houswives) plus the far from cheap UK productions. As only a handful are doing the numbers that were required to generate advertising revenues in a market and that in itself is being ripped apart by the use of the PVR and too much competition the results were inevitable.

CH4 does not have the luxury of the license fee or the shear inertia of ITV nor the small budget of Five, it is in hindsight the most fragile of the UK mainstream broadcasters and has been rocky for a number of years. A little bizarre that the company is doing quite well in the digital only arena with the low budgetted E4/F4 and M4 channels were the niche market is thriving something CH4 did once upon a time before it go ideas above it's station.
