Changing remote control

My sky + remote is getting a bit worn down, and I am looking to replace it with a new one. I know how to get them, but I have a question about programming it to the tv and sky box.

Should I take the batteries out of the old remote before loading the new one up with batteries, so the controllers don't mix with each other? It may seem a silly question, but I don't want to mess things up.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

P.S. I've got instructions on how to programme a new controller to the tv and box.

The remotes cannot talk to each other. If no one presses any buttons on the old one it can't control the box either. It really makes no difference which way you do it.
