Ive read through some of the search topics about CeX and found people have good and bad experiences. I have looked on there website a few times now and they offer some great prices for trade ins. I understand that dealing with them online is very hit and miss so i intend to go into my local store, in ipswich. I have a few questions about how the place works, if anyone would be able to help me out?

1) I understand that you have to have a membership? Ive heard it mentioned that this requires ID, all sounds a bit complex, if so is a driving license sufficient ID?

2) So you turn up with your goods, (games and dvds in my case) hand them over, they scan them and tell you the price which you can get in cash or credit. How is the credit issued, and do you have to spend it all at once or can you get "change" from it if that makes sense?

3) Ive heard that often they dont have enough cash. Is this a common thing or is it generally ok so long as you arent selling really expensive stuff?

4) Are there dvds generally in good condition? nothing worse than a dvd with a dirty looking case which you are afraid to touch:rolleyes:

Hope someone can shed some light on these questions for me, would be very helpful!

1) From what I remember it's Driving Licence, Bank Card, Bank Statement etc... Like joining a Blockbuster etc.

2) Yep, you can check online how much you'll get. They issue the credit via a receipt voucher thingy if you're not doing straight trades. If you use said voucher for items under it's value, they issue you with a new receipt with the "change". These last for 12 months. Be careful, they are printed like regular receipts, so anyone else who's self employed knows, if you keep the voucher crumpled it can fade off the ink. Even if this happens this shouldn't be a problem as your local store has a record of your trades/vouchers and what has and hasn't been redeemed.

3) I've been before when I've heard they've sometimes run out of cash. Depends how much cash they have turned over that day and how much your selling.

4) The DVD's conditions? How long's a piece of string? Some people are scutters and sell filthy items. Generally I've never had a problem, Blu-Rays 99% in good nick, maybe only hardcore AV colletors buy them and take care of them? And they're newer stuff. A ten year old release of a DVD could have spent ten years been booted around someones house and used as a coaster. I once saw a copy of Natural Born Killers which looked like a dog had bit the top left corner of the case off! Also, on my first visit, I saw a copy of Reservoir Dogs where the sleeve looked like a child had made it by cutting pictures and text out of newspapers and magazines - it was hilarious!! Apparently they are told that all items must go out clean and in good nick. Everything is out on display so you can inspect before purchasing. Any excessively scratched discs are repaired on sight (apparently).

I've used cex quite often (due to high trade in and some ridiculously low sale prices on occassions). Used stores in Sheffield (local), Coventry, Birmingham, Nottingham, Manc, Derby, Exeter, Wakefield, Huddersfield. Some stores have painfully slow customer services, but some are ace with excellent service. hit and miss like any franchise establishment.

For ID I would make sure it is something with your name and address on - not sure if the new plastic driving licences have this - may just be on the paper bit you goes with it (I still hve a paper driving licence so not sure on that).

If a disk looks bad refuse to have it, they will then put it on there resurfacer machine and it comes out like new. You also have the right to bring stuff back if they don't work.

Cheers,

Nigel

Ive been to their stores twice to try and trade in for cash and both times thay have not had any cash. Both times was a week day and they said come back Saturday. Ive been in 3 CEX stores and every one seems to be run by a bunch of half arsed stoner skater dudes. I use them but just do it online and post my trade-ins to them. They dont allow their store phone numbers to get into circulation so you cant ring them to find out if thay have the cash. Good luck.

I think you should try an atleast trade on here first, CEX offer good trade in prices, but the cash isn't good, the only reason the trade is so high is because they resell so high.

These are the prices for DVD's from CEX's DVD webpage (the ones they promote) and their Amazon price;

Marley and me, CEX £6 Amazon £4.98
Fast and Furious Blu Ray CEX £10 Amazon £10.98
The Hangover CEX £12 Amazon £9.98
Ice Age 3 CEX £10 Amazon £9.98

And all the CEX stock is second hand, I think any loss you would make selling on here would be re-couped by purchasing online.

I don't tend to "deal" with them anymore after the fiasco i had with Guitar Hero. A guitar was priced at £18 online and the game was £12, so i went instore, got the game from the shelf and asked for a guitar at the desk. The guy said "i think the guitars are downstairs" and paused as if he didn't want to make the journey, then he actually had the nerve to say "do you want me to go downstairs?"

All the while he was away on this "epic journey" downstairs, another member of staff tried flogging me a package they had for £45, i said how can you sell it as a package for that price when separatly the items only come to £30?? Anyway, the guy came back with a guitar and i left with a better deal than they offered. As i was walking out they were muttering amongst themselves, i don't think they realised what they'd done with their pricing.

They have a Plasma in the window of my branch, they run it all day everyday, not the best idea, but I suppose they have to advertise it. Sometimes they pay over retail for games, if a brand new game comes out that is hyped up (maybe GTA4??) the were buying them or £45 and selling for £50 I think, only for the first few days though

You dont have to be a member to buy from the shop right? unless this is something new, i have bought from there several times and not a member. Actually once i almost bought some CDs and realised it would be cheaper to buy new in HMV, yet the amount of people blindly buying them assuming becuase they are second hand they must be cheap is quite shocking.

One has just opened in my town, Game and Gamestation are cheaper with second hand stuff and their movies are way way overpriced.......Maybe ok to sell but I certainly wouldn't buy there.

Hi,

r.e. ID - one must be a photo ID (e.g. driving licence, passport or other photographic ID), and the other, something with your name and address on it dated within the past 3 months (utiltiy bill, council letter, etc - but NO mobile phone bills, and NO benefits letters, as they are considered to be too easily altered/faked).

CEX are okay in my view: have sold them plenty of stuff when I've been desperate for cash, but they are very hit-and-miss! :lesson: Sometimes you'll get a reasonable offer, and at other times, the offer will be peanuts (but still not as bad as some places may offer you - no names mentioning! :D )

Also be warned: most days of the week, you will NOT be able to get cash for trading in stuff! Instead, they will try to convince you to take a "receipt" for the value of the goods, to spend in their stores, or will ask you to come back at another time (or even day). However, they will NOT be able to guarantee you cash, when you turn up. The amount of times, CEX have promised me (or other customers I've seen in-store) with cash, and then suddenly find "no cash available" is farcicle! Just check out their own website forums, for the amount of complaints about it.

Even their bigger branches, like in London, still can't promise you will get cash, in spite of their adverts promising you cash for trading-in stuff! :nono:

Buying from them, you don't need to be a member, but selling them you do. Also, as others have said, double-check everything you buy from them, and always keep the receipts! :lesson: Some stuff they sell, is in good nick, but a lot is scuffed, damaged, with torn covers or writing on the sleeves, etc, which doesn't exactly give you a good impression as the new "owner" of an item.

And shop around, if you are planning on buying something from them! You may well be able to get said item for a similar or better price, and possibly even brand new, online or in some local shops! ;) Don't just assume they are giving you a good deal!

I've never had a problem with their games or dvds. Sometimes they'll come with a partially torn off sticker on the case but that's about it. The discs themselves vary in condition. Some look almost new others look like ex-rentals, i.e. absolutely covered in scratches, but I've never had a problem with playback. But in terms of price (for dvds and games) they're hard to beat and definitely worth a punt. I picked up The Complete Sopranos Deluxe Edition (online) in excellent condition for about £30 less than any other store was selling it.

Thanks for all the responses. Those that said its better to sell them on here or ebay, i disagree really because people will only buy stuff on here that is desirable, whereas CeX are offering like £7 each for a bunch of old gamecube games i have, £2 for a lot of dvds (your hard pushed to shift a dvd on here for 2 quid, and thne you have to take postage out of it!) Also i have a couple of non working phones which they offer a fiver each for- just a good way of getting money for a load of old junk really!

I actually think their 2nd hand prices are very fair on the older items. New films are stupidly priced at least equal to retail in many cases. But older items for example close encounters of the third kind collectors edition dvd they were doing for £2 when the cheapest online price is double that. I was intending to pick a bunch of dvds that i want from the store, and trade in a few things to pay for those, and then trade in the rest of my stuff for cash to spend elsewhere.

Do what you feel is best, but you have nothing to lose putting things up here, no listing fees, it costs about 90p to post a DVD. Stick them on here, wait a day or two, then sell to CEX. That's what I'd do.

CEX occasionally seem to be suffering from price/value delusions. They have a Plasma in the window in the Pompey Shop which looks to be around 5 years old and I would doubt that it is HD Ready yet they want £400 for it!

Have noticed that one - it's been there a good while now! I noticed it was stil lthere this afternoon, whilst I was waiting for a bus. Not sure they'll shift it to be honest, given the deals of new kit from the likes of Richer Sounds etc.

For anyone interested in CEX but wary of the no cash excuse, try musicmagpie.com, you can see what price you get before committing.

I got my PS3 (40gb backwards combat version) from CEX when they were still around £380, managed to trade in enough stuff (including my old xbox hd-dvd player) to accumulate about £200 of vouchers which went on the ps3, £200 for a ps3 seemed good enough to me, hasnt let me down.

on the other hand, the amount of dvds, hd-dvds, blu-rays, games etc i've had to return because of how scratched they are is a bit of a joke. you can usually find a similar price online with the likes of play.com or amazon, and of course, right here on the forums.

I just had a look on this site, the prices they offer are a disgrace really. for dvds that CeX are offering 2 quid, they offer 44 PENCE, not even 25% of CeXs price, and nothing i have typed in has come at more than 50% of the CeX price.

Just to update this, i went to CeX in ipswich today and in general it was a good experience despite a lot of the feedback i have seen. I traded in a handful of old games and a dvd, all of which came out at the same price that their website suggested, and was paid in cash having shown my driving license for ID. There was a huge cue, which i wasnt expecting on a monday afternoon, and most people looked to be selling and not buying, so i was a bit worried they wouldnt have cash, but they did:thumbsup:

On the downside, i took my old non-working phone to trade in and he said they dont take broken phones despite what their website said, which claimed i would be offered £5 for it. That was a little annoying. The only other complaint was that the selection of dvds for sale in store was CRAP. I was looking for at least 6 titles, all of which the website said were in stock at this store, and none of them were. It was full of stuff like the matrix, casino royale etc. So there is basically zero point getting store credit because they dont have anything you are after!

If you play them at there own game you can make a killing

traded a DS Lite in 2 years ago for £145 store credit before crimbo, and any other wanted items at a profit... bought a new one after crimbo for £80... used store credit towards a PS3...

Rule of thumb is, trade stuff in at a profit and only get credit and use credit on hardware. as the games \ dvds are a rip off.

OR

get Gamestation to price match trade prices...

They sell second hand GTX 760 graphics cards for £190, you can buy them brand new with a game for less. So i thought I'd try to haggle the price down and got told by their member of staff "If you can get it cheaper elsewhere, then shop elsewhere" Whilst insulting me she had her hands on the copper connectors of the graphics card, which can cause irreparable damage due to static electricity. I wrote to their head office who confirmed that it is their company policy to sell second hand goods for a higher price than they retail for. Great place to go if you want to be ripped off and insulted.

That seems to be normal in all their stores. Whenever I go in there's always a lot of people waiting. A while ago I took in a couple of (admittedly older) games for trade in. I was waiting ages to be served. They offered me less than £1 in cash, or a credit voucher for £2. It doesn't ever expire, so I'll wait until prices of 2nd hand PS3 games come down a bit.

Mine is a great shop. They are always polite and yes I do have to que sometimes but we have to do that everywhere.

Have to say can't see how she insulted you by telling you to buy it elsewhere if you can find it cheaper than they are selling? Do they sell stuff at higher than retail? Yes they do. Do you sometimes get bargains? Yes you do.

If it's to rich for you buy it somewhere else where is cheaper ;)

Like I said before, CEX base prices on Ebay and supply and demand.

But you know what you are getting when you use them, only worth it if you have store credit, only a complete Muppet would go in and pay cash for anything unless a complete bargain. as we all know its second hand and can be got cheaper new online.

I would imagine if you go in with an attitude you would get it back.

I use CEX more to price match trades for Game. Or trade in import games that I can not flog.

New member in four year old thread bump shocker...
No agenda here then...

Just kidding, welcome to the forums Simon :)
