Shame that it is just an evaluation disc instead of a calibration disc but thats just the norm for S&M
I imagine it might have a use for setting brightness and contrast depending on the max nits of the display being used
it probably wont be cheap I look forward to the review once the disc is released

The information posted below by me is incorrect as Stacey Spears points out in this post here:
CES VIDEO: Spears and Munsil 4K HDR Evaluation Disc in March
I look forward to this being launched and adding it to my collection :)

      Be interesting to see this.
The HD version makes some interesting implementation choices.
The disc is effectively authored with the test images as RGB stills I believe (instead of YCrCb video) so there is a difference in how video might be played by your player to how the test images are displayed. You can see some of the differences if you compare things like the RGB ramps against other discs that have them encoded as video.

The disc will include a full set of patterns for use with software like CalMAN. My point of calling it an evaluation disc is to state that HDR really needs software like CalMAN (or whatever you like to use) to really calibrate HDR.

The patterns on all our discs is YCbCr 4:2:0 encoded in VC-1 (1st Edition), AVC (2nd Edition) and HEVC (HDR Edition).

Any questions, happy to try and answer.

All of our patterns are encoded as video. We do only encode a single frame so it’s an I frame and the quality won’t vary over the clip playback. We use the timer of the authoring system to make it play until the user decides to leave the pattern.

If we had to encode as running video, it would have taken more than one disc. :)

We also create many patterns directly in 4:2:0 so there is no chroma down sample. Our ramps are created like that. Color Bars must be created in RGB for proper time alignment and then we convert to 4:2:0.

Will we all need calman to benifit from this? I have a 75Z9D and would be interested in this but not if the use is very narrow for someone like me.

Thanks for the detail, apologies that I'd jumped to a wrong conclusion; I'll edit my original post (leaving my mis-information in place for continuity, but making it clear it is wrong).

I'm even more intrigued by the differences in the ramps now! :). If I get a moment I'll have to dig them out again.

      Interesting
Will Calman recognise the new disc as a source for pattern generation?

Unless I made a mistake I found that the S&M 2nd edition did not have patterns that I could easily use with Calman 2018 Home Enthusiast software

CalMAN does not have disc based sources. You have to use manual mode. We did layout the window section to match the HDR verification workflow. I want to look into making a source for OPPO that would control the disc over IP. I don’t know which other players have this capability.

I do have the menu items mocked up in PowerPoint. I use it to draw boxes. I can share if anyone wants to see the pattern names.

Have you used the 2nd edition disc? If so, you should be comfortable with the new one. If not, then you might want to hire a calibrator.

I have the Sony 65” Z9D and an LG 55” OLED that I use for testing.

Phil, I added the local zone counter pattern you asked for.

Here is the menu mock-up so you can see the patterns on the disc as of today. (Already fixed one bug in the mock-up since this was made)
