Is this an AVP or AVR? The AVR850 had amplification but the successor doesn't?
The model lettering doesn't make sense considering it's a processor, no?

Not understanding why there's any confusion with this but i'm guessing the title should have AV860 instead of AVR860.....!! The clue is in the title later though....AV processor....!! :D

According to Arcam.co.uk it's actually an AV860 (the successor to the AV950 which was replacement for the AV888 which was the latest in a range which started with the AV8 then AV9).

Yes it's the AV860, Ed was a bit tired when he wrote that.

Any info on what has been improved from the AV850 receiver? The processor is virtually the same price without the G class amps and I'm assuming something must be better. Many thanks Paul

There is a bit more info on the Movie Rooms site:

      - Super high-end studio grade balanced output driver stage based around silicon from the That’s Corporation in the USA.
      - Re-optimized low voltage power supply featuring a new super quite toroid transformer.
      - Separate isolated power supplies for each internal building block.
      - Immunity to high current transient surges within a AVR design.
Based on the same award winning low jitter transparent DSP as found in the AVR850.
-6dB quietter than the previous reference 950 processor.

And assembled in the U.K rather than Vietnam.

As ever, the Arcam website lacks any really useful, comparative information.

Many thanks felty, that's certainly better than nothing and does sound like an upgrade in processing quality compared to the 850:)

An interesting response from Arcam below, a think a home demo would be necessary.

Thanks Joe, I guess the 64000 dollar question remains. Is it more transparent than the AV850:thumbsdow

I would have thought the pertinent question would be how a AV860 sounds (in your system) compared with a AVR390...

The article title still says AVR860 though.

Can't be, casing is still metal - though I'm sure someone will make one out of acrylic or even tempered glass if you ask nicely.

On a more serious note, I'd be disappointed if the price doesn't come in somewhere between the 550 and 750, after all they made a whole song and dance about the Class G amplification, so surely the extra features on the 860 aren't worth more than the amplification they're taking out...?

Yeah it appears to me these things are just ways to make way more money for the same thing. Sell one box with amps built in for £4K or take the amps out and into a second box and now sell two boxes for £5k + £5k to same person instead. Plenty of suckers with more money than sense or knowledge around.

So it looks like it's about £4000 less a few pounds? The 850 is about £4500, so unless you're that keen on balanced outputs I think the AVR850 is the better deal, plus it can be used on its own if you want to in future, and it'll probably keep a better resale value as an all-in-one box.
Look at me being a naysayer

If you just want the processing then the AVR390 is a far better deal. The question is, do you want slightly cleaner audio and balanced outputs...

Slightly cleaner audio? You mean the 390 isn't clean?

Kit like this being touted as an "upgrade" is pure b*ll*cks imho.

I think we need more comparative data about how well the processor performs before rushing to judgement.

What data do arcam publish which would allow you to compare how this processor performs in the real world against a previous model?

I have no doubt that the AV860 would sound better than the AVR390. Whether that difference (however big or small) is worth the extra money is completely up to the buyer

Exactly, until we get some good reviews and individual reports on performance compared to other processors we are all shooting in the dark.
