      :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
Both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision on the same player. Excellent news.

Although probably the only player having this feature set (UB820) will be priced similar to the UB900 at it's initial release with it being, like the UB900, the only announced Panasonic player having 7.1 analogue outs :(:(:(

Hopefully not though and it comes in nearer £450 to £500 than the £600+ the UB900 came out at. Or wait 6-9 months for it to come down to near the current UB900 price level.

I hope they will have good enough hearing to be able to pick out the voice commands over the din of a full blown atmos movie doing its thing at reference levels.
Alexa pause, ALEXA PAUSE, oh *** ALEXA PAUSE
Where did I put the remote control... ;)

Thanks for the run down Steve:smashin:.

Sounds interesting the HDR Optimiser, would like to see if this really could improve HDR.

I saw a demo of it using a TV that only had a peak brightness of about 500 nits (Panasonic wouldn't say which one but it looked like a Sony XE85) and the HDR Optimiser worked really well. They switched between it being on and off and the image was clearly clipped with it off but everything was properly display with it on. It will certainly be an interesting feature to test when we get the new players in for review.

I'm very happy I didn't buy into UHD on release now.

HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, defo peaks my interest.
Even though 3D is part on the BD profile, seems strange to include 3D playback, when their newly announced OLED displays have no 3D.

Any word on whether any of the new features might be added to 2017 players, via firmware updates?

I have a Harmony hub/echo dot setup and this is a real issue already! :D

Off topic, I noticed on the website for my 2017 Denon that it will have an update for voice commands, looks like 2018 is the year of the voice*

      * No, not that bloody Tom Jones thing. :)

and there’s the very reason not to buy first & second generation devices....interesting to see what Sony has up their sleeve later!

      This is great news!

I bought the UB900 at launch and apart from an early issue at the start with audio dropouts (which was corrected within a few weeks) was a sterling piece of kit - I only changed to the Oppo 203 to get DV.

When the DP-UB820 is available for pre-order I'll be in line and will revert to my Oppo 103D for regular blu-ray which I think (with Darbee processing) is superior to anything for 1080p BD.

First generation came out, what April 2016? You cant really sit and wait for certain features in technology these days, there's always another feature around the corner.

Future proof, ironically is a thing of the past now.

Understand that but Dolby Vision really should have been supported before this generation. I personally think that some of these companies think we have money trees at the end of the garden for annual hardware upgrades.

Well, they kind of do :D and this HDR10+ has been born out of companies not wanting to pay for DV. Which does add to the confusion of why they have added both now.

If 'HDR Optimiser' actually works, that combined with the support for DV could well make me switch from the UB900 to an 820. Once it's had a price drop or two. Still hurts to sit down after buying the 900 at launch :(

Me too, I guess from a technical/cost point of view it wouldn't alter the final retail price. Just wished that 4K TV's still had the ability for 3D.

I'm still rocking my Panasonic TX-P50GT60 and am in no rush to jump to 4K yet, but will pick up one of these players, or last years UB700 to play 4K UHD discs down sampled to 1080p, mainly so. I can enjoy the better sound that studios are putting on 4K discs

I take back what I said about you Panasonic. DV and HDR10+, good move.
Oh hang on, new OLEDs doesn't support DV but the player will..

Brilliant news and will be buying one for sure.

I love my UB700 but now I’ve moved to an LG Oled I’ve been wanting a new UHD player with DV but not keen on the Oppo’s.

      Great news!!

At 600+ temping to say sod it and get the oppo - at least it has the sound output quality to properly serve as an audio player.

But then you’d miss out on the better upscaling on the Panny! (As long as it’s as good or better at the current models)

Maybe. I'm also interested to see if Yamaha update their two BD players to 4K+DV as they have a convenience factor for me. Most likely if they do though, it will probably be long after CES.

Interesting that with the 820/420 they are highlighting the HXC processor, was this upgraded from the 900/700 models to handle HDR10+ and DV?

Naturally this is just my opinion and not all would agree but I have had the Sammy, 2 x Panny (700&900) And the Oppo UHD now and to me, the pannys easily have the best upscaling.

Prefer some of the features of the Oppo and GUI.

And I’d say that 4k playback was almost identical on all.

So if the Panny and Oppo are the same price, I’d choose the Panny all day long if it offers DV also too.

Interesting - I've seen reviews that say the opposite suggesting the oppo to have better PQ for both HDR BDs and DVDs upscaled to 4k. Not seen either though.

As the HCX processor is common to all of the new models and DV is only on one of them probably not. Although it does raise the question of how this is going to be done chipset wise.

While it's possible Panasonic will do two versions of the HCX (one with DV and the other without) it's more likely that the UB820 is using another chip (mediatek?) on the motherboard to handle this. Best scenario user wise is Panasonic just having the one HCX with DV turned off in the other players (thus giving scope for a possible hack to turn it on with them).

To be honest I haven’t owned DVD’s for many years so no idea on that side.

When I mentioned upscaling I meant Blu Ray only - (my fault I should have said that)

I’d ignore the majority of reviews that start going on about 4k HDR movies looking better or worse or at the very least take them with a huge pinch of salt.

Exciting times for uhd players [emoji1303]

Pleased to see 3D support in the 2018 players and hope we get some TVs showing up this year with that feature reinstated.
